ಇದನ್ನು ಪೆರುವುದೈಯರ್ ಕೊವಿಲ್ ಅಥವಾ ಬೃಹದೀಶ್ವರ್ ಟೆಂಪಲ್ ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಇದನ್ನು ರಾಜರಾಜೇಶ್ವರಮ್ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭಾರತದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ತಂಜಾವೂರ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ. ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲೇ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಬೆಣಚು ಶಿಲೆ ಅಥವಾ ಗ್ರ್ಯಾನೈಟ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿತ ಏಕೈಕ ದೇವಾಲಯವಾಗಿದೆ. ಆಗಿನ ಚೋಳರ ಕಾಲದ ಅರಸರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ವಕರ್ಮರಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿತ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಕಲಾಪ್ರಕಾರವಾಗಿದೆ. ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದು ತನ್ನ ಸುಂದರ ಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲೆಗೆ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವು ಅದರ ಪೋಷಕ ಅರಸು ರಾಜಾರಾಜಾ ಚೋಳ I ಈತನ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬವೆನಿಸಿದೆ. ಭಾರತದ ಹಲವಾರು ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪ ಕಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವೈಭಯುತವಾದ ಕಟ್ಟಡವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು UNESCOದ ವಿಶ್ವ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು “ಗ್ರೇಟ್ ಲಿವಿಂಗ್ ಚೋಳ ಟೆಂಪಲ್ಸ್” ಎಂದೂ ಬಣ್ಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಭಾರತ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿನ ಅತ್ಯಮೌಲ್ಯವಾದ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪದ ಕಲಾತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಬಲಯುತವಾದ ಗೋಡೆಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದು ಬಹುಶಃ ೧೬ ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ‘ವಿಮಾನ’ಅಥವಾ ಗೋಪುರವು ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು 216 ft (66 m)ಎತ್ತರದ ಕಳಶಪ್ರಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕಳಶ ಅಥವಾ ‘ಚಿಖರಾಮ್'(ಅಗ್ರಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮೇಲ್ತುದಿಯನ್ನು)ಅಖಂಡ ಗ್ರ್ಯಾನೈಟ್ ಕಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ನಂಬುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಂದಿ (ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗೂಳಿ) ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಬಂಡೆಗಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಸುಮಾರು ೧೬ ಅಡಿ ಉದ್ದ ಮತ್ತು ೧೩ ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಡೀ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಗಡುಸಾದ ಅಪರೂಪವೆನ್ನಲಾದ ಗ್ರ್ಯಾನೈಟ್ ನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸದ್ಯ ತಂಜಾವೂರ್ ನಲ್ಲಿನ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಲ್ಲು ದೊರೆಯುವುದು ವಿರಳವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಇದನ್ನು ಚೋಳರ ಅರಸನಾದ ರಾಜಾರಾಜಾ ೧೦೧೦ AD ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ. ತಂಜಾವೂರ್ ನಲ್ಲಿನ ಈ ಬೃಹದೀಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ‘ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೇವಾಲಯ’ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ೨೦೧೦ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ೧೦೦೦ ವರ್ಷ ಪೂರೈಸಿದೆ.
ಇತಿಹಾಸ
ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಶಂಕುಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯು ತಮಿಳು ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿ ಅರುಲಮೊಳಿವರ್ಮನ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈತನನ್ನು ರಾಜಾರಾಜಾ ಚೋಳ I ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗ ೧೦೦೨ CE ರಲ್ಲಿನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಉನ್ನತ ಶ್ರೇಣಿಯ ಮೊದಲ ತಮಿಳಿನಾಡಿನ ಚೋಳರ ಕಾಲದ ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೇವಾಲಯವೆನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ರಾಜಾರಾಜಾ ಚೋಳನು, ಈತ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಚೋಳ ಅರಸಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬನಾಗಿದ್ದನು. ಈ ಅರಸನಿಗೆ ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವಂತೆ ಆದೇಶ ದೊರೆಯಿತಂತೆ. ಇದರ ವೈಭವ ಮತ್ತು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಶೈಲಿಯು ಚೋಳರ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂದು ಅಕ್ಷೀಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಸಾಂಗತ್ಯ ಯುಳ್ಳ ರೇಖಾಗಣಿತ ದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇದರ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಅದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ಅನಂತರದ ಎರಡು ಶತಮಾನದ ವರೆಗೂ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ತಮಿಳ(ಚೋಳರ) ಸಂಪತ್ತು, ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿವೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಗುಣಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳಾದ ಬಹು ಮುಖಜದ ಹಂತಗಳ ಬಿಡಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವನ್ನು ಅದು ಚೌಕಾಕಾರದ ಪ್ರಧಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಂಕೇತಿಕ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಶೈಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ನವೀನ ಚೋಳಾ ಅರಸರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದ ಕನ್ನಡಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.
ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ ಪರಿಸರದೊಂದಿಗಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸಲು ಬೃಹದೀಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಆತ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿಬಹುದೆಂಬ ಬಲವಾದ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಜನರಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ರಾಜಮನೆತನದ ಹಲವು ಸಾಂದರ್ಭಿಕ ಸಮಾರಂಭಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ರಾಜರ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನ ಏರುವ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳಿಗೂ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅರ್ಚಿತ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ದಿನವೂ ರಾಜರ ಎದುರಲ್ಲೇ ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಸೇವಾ ಕೈಂಕರ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು ೬೦೦ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೇಮಕವಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಅರ್ಚನೆ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಸಂಗೀತ ಕಲಾವಿದರು, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನ್ವಿತರು, ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರು ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಪರಿಣತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಜನಸಮೂಹ ಸೇವೆಗಿತ್ತು. ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ವಿವಿಧ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ತಾಣವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹೂವಿನ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು, ಹಾಲು ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರರು, ತೈಲ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು, ತುಪ್ಪದ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಪೂರೈಕೆಯನ್ನು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪೂಜೆ-ಪುನಸ್ಕಾರಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಬ್ಬ-ಹರಿದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಸರಕು-ಪೂಜಾ ಸಾಮಗ್ರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅವರು ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಾಂಗಣ ಗೋಡೆಯ ಪ್ರಾಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ಬರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗ ಭರತ ನಾಟ್ಯದಂತಹ ನೃತ್ಯ ಸಮಾರಂಭಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದು ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸಂಗೀತ-ನೃತ್ಯ ಕಲಾವಿದರಿಗೆ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಂದೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಬೃಹದೀಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಲಾವಿದರಿಗೆ ಅತಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.
ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾದ ದ್ರಾವಿಡ ಶೈಲಿಯ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪವನ್ನು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಚೋಳ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ತತ್ವಸಿದ್ದಾಂತಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ನಾಗರಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೆರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಕಾರಣವೆನಿಸಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು “ಚೋಳ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲೆಗಳ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿವೆ.”ಅದರ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸ,ತಂತ್ರಗಾರಿಕೆ, ಚಿತ್ರಕಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸತುವಿನ ಮಿಶ್ರಣದ ಭಿತ್ತಿಗಳು ಅದರ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಹೆಗ್ಗುರುತಾಗಿವೆ.” ರಾಜಾರಾಜಾ ಚೋಳ ಅರಸನು ತಂಜಾವೂರ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬೃಹದೀಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಇಂದೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಅತಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದಲ್ಲದೇ ೧೦೦೦ ವರ್ಷದ ಹಿಂದಿನದಾಗಿದೆ.
ನದಿ ದಂಡೆಯೊಂದರ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ಅದು ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತವಾಗಿ ಕೋಟೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರ ಗೋಡೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೋಟೆಯ ಸುತ್ತಣ ಪ್ರಾಕಾರದಂತೆಯೇ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ಅಕ್ಷೀಯ ರೇಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಎದ್ದು ನಿಂತಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಐದು ಮಹಡಿಯ ಅಕ್ಷೀಯದೊಳಗಡೆ ಹಾಯ್ದು ಸಲೀಸಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಬಹುದು. ಗೋಪುರದ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ನೇರವಾದ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಸಾಧಿಸುವ ಅನುಕೂಲವೊದಗಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಗೋಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಾಮವಾಗಿ ನಿಂತು ನೀವು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗಾತ್ರದ ಅದರ ಶಿಖರ (ಇದು ಒಳಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಟೊಳ್ಳಾಗಿದ್ದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಏನನ್ನೂ ಅಳವಡಿಸಲಾಗದು) ಇದು ೬೩ ಮೀಟರ್ ಎತ್ತರ, ಒಟ್ಟು ೧೬ ಮಡಿಕೆಯುಳ್ಳ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಯ ಮಹಡಿ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸವಿದೆ. ಇದು ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಚತುಷ್ಕೋನೀಯ ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಗೋಡೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಚಾಚಿದ ಭಾಗ, ಅಟ್ಟಳಿಗೆಗಳು, ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡ ಹಂತಗಳು ಮೂಲೆಯ ಅಂಚುಗಳಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಅದನ್ನು ಶಿಖರಕ್ಕೆ ಪೂರಕವಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಇಂತಹ ಬೃಹತ್ ಗಾತ್ರದ ದೇವಾಲಯವೊಂದನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ರಾಜಾ ರಾಜಾ ಅರಸು ಆಗ ಈಳಮ್ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟನಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಈ ವಿಚಾರದ ಮೊಳಕೆಯೊಡೆಯಿತು.
ಸುಮಾರು ೧೩೦,೦೦೦ ಟನ್ನಗಳಷ್ಟು ಗ್ರ್ಯಾನೈಟ್ ಬಳಕೆಯಿಂದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ೬೦-ಮೀಟರ್ ಎತ್ತರದ ವಿಮಾನದ ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಶಿಲ್ಪವು ಇಡೀ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಸರಿಸಾಟಿಯಿಲ್ಲದಂತಿದೆ. ಈ ವಿಮಾನ ಇಮಾರತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯುರೊಪಿಯನ್ ರ ಕಟ್ಟಡದಂತೆ ತಿರುವುಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.ಬರುವ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಶ್ ರಿಗೆ ಇದೊಂದು ತೆರನಾದ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ಎಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಪುರಾತತ್ವ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲ ಇದೊಂದು ವದಂತಿ, ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಅಂಶವೆಂದರೆ ಈ ಗೋಪುರದ ನೆರಳು ಇದರ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬೀಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಬೃಹದೀಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ “ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೇವಾಲಯ”ಎಂದು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಹೆಸರು ಪಡೆದಿದೆ. ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವಾಗಿ ೧೦೦೦ ವರ್ಷ ಕಳೆದಿರುವ ಅದೀಗ ೧೦೦೦ನೆಯ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬ ಆಚರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದರ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವ,ಅದರ ಭವ್ಯ ರಚನೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೊಚ್ಚ ಹೊಸದಾಗಿದೆ. ರಾಜ್ಯಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ರಾಜಾ ರಾಜಾ ಚೋಳ ಅರಸನು ತಾನು ಗದ್ದುಗೆಯೇರಿದ ೨೭೫ ದಿನ ಮತ್ತು ೨೫ ವರ್ಷ ಆಡಳಿತದ ಕುರುಹು ಆಗಿ ಆಗ ಗೋಪುರದ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದ ವಿಮಾನದ ಹೊದಿಕೆಗೆ ಕಳಶಮ್ವನ್ನು (ತಾಮ್ರದ ಕೊಡ ಅಥವಾ ಕಳಸ) ಆತ ನೀಡಿದ್ದ. ದೇವಾಲಯ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಂಡ ಅನಂತರ ಆತ ಈ ವಿಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಕಿರೀಟ ತೊಡಿಸಿದ್ದ.
