ತಲಕಾಡು ಮೈಸೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಯಾತ್ರಾ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಮೈಸೂರಿನಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು ೪೫ ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಅತಿ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿ, ಮರಳು ಮತ್ತು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪುರಾತನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳು ಜನರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವೀಯಾಗಿವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಗಂಗರ ಕಾಲದ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗ ದರ್ಶನ ವಿಶೇಷವಾದದ್ದು. ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗ ದರ್ಶನವು ೧೨ ಅಥವಾ ೧೩ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ತಲಕಾಡು ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ 30 ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಭವ್ಯ ನಗರವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ 16ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವುಗಳೆಲ್ಲವು ಮರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಹೋದವು. ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ತಲಕಾಡು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗ ಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಈಶ್ವರನು ನೆಲಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ತಲಕಾಡು ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕಾಶಿ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಹೆಸರು ಒಂದು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಬೇಡರ ಅವಳಿ ಸಹೋದರರ ಹೆಸರು ತಲಾ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಡು. ಒಂದು ಮರವನ್ನು ಕಡಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಅವರು ಒಂದು ಆನೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರು, ಆನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡರು. ಆ ಮರವು ಪುನಃ ಮರು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನೆ ಆಯಿತು. ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು. ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ಆ ಜಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ತಲಕಾಡು ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು ಬಂತು. ಎರಡು ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳಿ ಜವಳಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರವೂ ಬಂತು. ಆ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳು ವೀರಭದ್ರಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಮುಂದೆ ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷ ನಂತರ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದನು. ಮೊದಲಿನ ಅಧಿಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ತಲಕಾಡು ಗಂಗರ ವಂಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿತು. ಹರಿವರ್ಮ ಜಾಗವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಲು ಸಹಾಯ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇದು ಸ್ಕಂಧ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಳವಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ದಲವಂತ್ ಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ತಲಕಾಡು ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಆಯಿತು. ೧೧ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗಾರಾಜರಿಂದ ಚೋಳರಾಜರು ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು.

ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ಆ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ರಾಜರಾಜಪುರ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟರು. ಸುಮಾರು ೧೦೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ರಾಜ ವಿಷ್ಣು ವರ್ಧನ ಚೋಳ ರಾಜ ವಂಶವನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಹಾಕಿದರು. ಆಗ ತಲಕಾಡುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ೭ ಪಟ್ಟಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ೫ ಮತಾಸ್‍ನ್ನು ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಮಾಲಂಗಿಯ ಪಟ್ಟಣವು ನದಿಯ ಎದರು ಇತ್ತು. ಅದು ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪಟ್ಟಣವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅದರ ಹೆಸರು ಜನಾರ್ಧನಪುರ. ೧೪ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ವಾಧಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂತು. ವಿಜಯ ನಗರ ಸೋಮರಾಜರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿತ್ತು.

ವೈಧ್ಯೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ

ಹಿಂದೆ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ಕುಲದ ಸೋಮದತ್ತನೆಂಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನಿದ್ದನು. ಅವನು ಸಂಸಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಿಗುಪ್ಸೆಹೊಂದಿ ವಾರಣಾಸಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸಿದನು. ಕಾಶಿ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರನು ಅವನ ಭಕ್ತಿಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷನಾದನು. ತಮಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಸಶರೀರ ಮುಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕರುಣಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಸೋಮದತ್ತನು ಬೇಡಿಕೊಂಡನು.
ಆದರೆ ಆ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಸೋಮದತ್ತನಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ದೊರೆಯಲಾರದೆಂದೂ, ಆತನು ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯರೊಡನೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಗಂಗೆ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಗಿರುವ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕಾವೇರಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿನ ಗಜಾರಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತ ಆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕಪಿಲ ಸಂಗಮದಿಂದ ಕೆಲವೇ ಹರಿದಾರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ವೈಧ್ಯೇಶ್ವರನೆಂದು ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.

ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಋಚೀಕ ಋಷಿಯ ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ನೀನು ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸು, ಕಾಶಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಮಿಗಿಲಾದ ಮಹಿಮೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಆ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿನಗೆ ಸಾಯುಜ್ಯ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದನು. ಸೋಮದತ್ತನು ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರನ ನುಡಿಯಂತೆ ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯ ಪರಿವಾರದೊಡನೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡನು. ಅವರು ವಿಂಧ್ಯ ಪರ್ವತದ ದಟ್ಟವಾದ ಕಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಆಗ ಇದ್ದಕಿದ್ದ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಆನೆಗಳ ಹಿಂಡೊಂದು ಅವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಎರಗಿ ಬಂತು. ಗಾಬರಿಗೊಂಡ ಸೋಮದತ್ತ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಶಿಷ್ಯರು ಆನೆ ಆನೆ ಎಂದು ಕೂಗುತ್ತಲೇ ಆ ಮದ್ದಾನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಬಲಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾಣ ನೀಗಿದರು. ಅವರು ಸಾಯವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೆಯ ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನೆ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೆದರಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮುಂದೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಆನೆಯ ಜನ್ಮವೇ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾಯಿತು. ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರನು ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗಜಾರಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವೇರಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಆನೆಯಾಗಿಯೇ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದರು.

ಗಜಾರಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸೊಂಪಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಬೂರುಗದ ಮರ, ಆ ಮರದ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ದಟ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕವಿದ ಪೊದೆಗಳು, ಆನೆಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಗೋಕರ್ಣ ಸರೋವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿಂದು, ಸೊಂಡಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರನ್ನು ತುಂಬಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಮಲವನ್ನು ಕಚ್ಚಿ ಆ ಮರದ ಬುಡದ ಪೊದೆಯ ಕಡೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಬಂದು ಸೊಂಡಿಲ ನೀರನ್ನು ಚುಮುಕಿಸಿ ಆ ಪೊದೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೂವಿಟ್ಟು ನಮಿಸಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಆ ದೃಶ್ಯವನ್ನು ‘ತಲ’ ‘ಕಾಡ’ ಎಂಬ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಬೇಡರು ನಿತ್ಯವೂ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯಗೊಂಡ ಅವರು ಅದೇನು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಎರಡು ಕೊಡಲಿಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದರು. ಪೊದೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಡಿದರು. ಕಡಿಯುವಾಗ ಅವರ ಕೊಡಲಿ ಯಾವುದೋ ವಸ್ತುವಿಗೆ ತಾಕಿದಂತಾಯಿತು. ರಕ್ತ ಚಿಮ್ಮಿತು. ಅದೇನೆಂದು ನೋಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೊಂದು ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ. ಅದರ ನೆತ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ರಕ್ತ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಅವರು ಹೆದರಿ ನಡುಗತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಆಗ ಅಶರೀರವಾಣಿಯೊಂದಾಯಿತು.

ಎಲೈ ಕಿರಾತಕರೆ, ನಿಮಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ನಾನಿಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಈ ಬೂರುಗದ ಮರದ ಎಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹಣ್ಣನ್ನೂ ಅರೆದು ಗಾಯವಾದ ಜಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬಳಿಯಿರಿ, ಸುರಿಯುವ ರಕ್ತ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ರಕ್ತ ಹಾಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಆ ಹಾಲನ್ನು ನೀವು ಸೇವಿಸಿದರೆ ನಿಮಗೆ ಗಣಪದವಿ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ”.
ದೇವವಾಣಿಗೆ ಬೇಡರು ತಲೆಬಾಗಿದರು. ಕೂಡಲೇ ಬೂರುಗದ ಮರದ ಎಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹಣ್ಣನ್ನು ತೇದು ಗಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿದರು. ರಕ್ತ ಹರಿಯುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಹಾಲು ಹರಿಯಿತು. ಅದನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸಿದ ಬೇಡರಿಗೆ ಗಣಪದವಿ ದೊರೆಯಿತು. ಆ ತಲ ಕಾಡ ಎನ್ನುವ ಬೇಡರಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಆ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ “ತಲಕಾಡು” ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅದೇ ಈಗಿನ ತಲಕಾಡು.
ಆನೆಯ ರೂಪಿನ ಸೋಮದತ್ತನೂ ಹಾಲನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸಿ ಶರೀರವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಸಶರೀರಿಯಾಗಿ ಮೋಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದನು. ತನ್ನ ಗಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಾನೇ ವೈದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸಿದವನಲ್ಲವೆ? ಆದುದರಿಂದಲೇ ವೈದ್ಯನಾಥ ಅಥವಾ ವೈಧ್ಯೇಶ್ವರನೆಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಯಿತು. ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಈ ನೆಲೆ ಅನೆಗಳು ಮೋಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗಜಾರಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಯಿತು.

೧೧೧೬ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನನ ದಂಡನಾಯಕನಾದ ಗಂಗರಾಜನು, ಚೋಳರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಟ ಮಾಡಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ತಲಕಾಡನ್ನು ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಈ ಗೆಲುವಿನ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ತಲಕಾಡುಗೊಂಡ ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದನ್ನು ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನನಿಗೆ ಲಭಿಸಿತು. ಅವನೂ, ಅವನ ನಂತರ ಬಂದ ರಾಜರುಗಳು ತಲಕಾಡನ್ನು ೧೪ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ಮಧ್ಯಭಾಗದವರೆಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ವಶದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ತಲಕಾಡು ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು, ಏಳು ಪುರಗಳನ್ನೂ ಐದು ಮಠಗಳನ್ನೂ ಒಳಗೊಂಡು ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರ ಉಪರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾಗಿ ಮೆರೆಯಿತು. ೧೩ನೆಯ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ (೧೨೯೧-೧೩೪೨) ಅವನ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾದ ಪೆರುಮಾಳ್ ಡಣಾಯಕ ತಲಕಾಡಿನ ಆಚೆಯ ದಡದ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಪಾಠಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಜಹಗೀರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಟ್ಟ. ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಗಳು ಶಿವ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷ್ಣು ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳೆರಡಕ್ಕೂ ಸಹಾಯ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ೧೧೧೭ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನ ತಲಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀರ್ತಿನಾರಾಯಣ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ. ಅನಂತರ ಬಂದ ರಾಜರು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅನೇಕ ಕಾಣಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದರು.
