ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಅಥವಾ ಶಿವಾಜಿರಾಜೆ ಶಹಾಜಿರಾಜೆ ಭೋಂಸ್ಲೆ ,ಫೆಬ್ರುವರಿ ೧೯, ೧೬೩೦/ಫೆಬ್ರುವರಿ ೧೯, ೧೬೨೭ – ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ ೩, ೧೬೮೦,ಮರಾಠಾ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರು. ಇವರು ೧೬೩೦ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಪುಣೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರುವ ಶಿವನೇರಿಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರು ೧೬೭೪ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ ಮರಾಠಾ ರಾಜ್ಯವು ೧೮೧೮ರ ವರೆಗೂ ರಾರಾಜಿಸಿತು.

ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಯುದ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯ ತಂದೆ  ಶಹಾಜಿ ಅವರು ಜೀಜಾಬಾಯಿಯ ಲಗ್ನವಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇವರ ಮಗನಾಗಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಪುಣೆಯ ಸಮೀಪದ ಶಿವನೇರಿ ದುರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ಜಹಗೀರಾಗಿ ಪಡೆದು ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸೇನಾನೆಲೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಪತ್ನಿ ಸುಧಾಬಾಯಿಯೊಡನೆ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶಹಾಜಿ ಜಾಗೀರುದಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ರಾಜರಂತೆಯೇ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ನಾಣ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಠಂಕಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕೋಟೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೌರಿ ಮಹಲ್ ಎಂಬ ಸುಸಜ್ಜಿತ ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಿುಸಿದ್ದರು. ನಂದಿಬೆಟ್ಟ ಆಗಲೇ ಶಹಾಜಿ ಬೇಸಿಗೆ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಶಿವಾಜಿಯ ಮೊದಲ ಮಗ ಸಂಬಾಜಿ ಕೋಲಾರ- ದೊಡ್ಡಬಳ್ಳಾಪುರ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳ ಆಡಳಿತ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

ತನ್ನ 12ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನವರೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲೇ ವಾಸವಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಾಜಿಗೆ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟವರು ಅಣ್ಣ ಸಂಬಾಜಿ. ನಂತರ ಶಿವನೇರಿ ದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿದ ಶಿವಾಜಿಗೆ ಪೂರ್ಣಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಯುದ್ಧ ಕೌಶಲವನ್ನು ಧಾರೆ ಎರೆದವರು ದಾದಾಜಿ ಕೊಂಡದೇವ. ಕತ್ತಿವರಸೆ, ಕುದುರೆ ಸವಾರಿ, ಯುದ್ಧಕಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕರಗತ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಶಿವಾಜಿ 17ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ತೋರಣದುರ್ಗ ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಹತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಯ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಗಳನ್ನು ಇಡಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಎಳೆಯ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದಲೇ ತಾಯಿ ಜೀಜಾಬಾಯಿಯಿಂದ ಜೀವನ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಸಂತ ರಾಮದಾಸರ ಪರಮಭಕ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

ತಾಯಿ ಜೀಜಾಬಾಯಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗುರು ಕೊಂಡದೇವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ವಿವಾಹ ನೆರವೇರಿದ್ದು 1640-42ರ ಸುಮಾರಿಗೆ. ಆಗ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಕೋಟೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಇದ್ದ ಗೌರಿಮಹಲ್​ನಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮೊದಲ ವಿವಾಹ ನಿಂಬಾಳ್ಕರ್ ಮನೆತನದ ಸಾಯಿಬಾಯಿ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವಿಜೃಂಭಣೆಯಿಂದ ಜರುಗಿತು. ಪರದೇಶಿಗಳ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ನಲುಗಿಹೋಗಿದ್ದ ಹಿಂದೂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿಸುವ ಮಹತ್ವದ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಕೊಂಕಣ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಅನೇಕ ಕೋಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದರು. ಯುದ್ಧಕೌಶಲದಿಂದ ಹಲವಾರು ಯುದ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಜಯ ಸಾಧಿಸಿ 1674ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮರಾಠ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಂದಿಹಾಡಿದರು.

ಶಹಾಜಿ ಜಾಗೀರು ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದಾದಾಜಿ ಕೊಂಡದೇವ ಅವರಿಂದ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಸೈನಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಕಾಡುಮೇಡುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿ ಅನುಭವ ಪಡೆದರು. ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟಗಳ ಮಾವಳರೆಂಬ ಗಿರಿಜನರನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಅವರ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಸಾಹಸಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಅವರನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಬಲವಾದ ಪಡೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಮರಾಠ ನಾಯಕರೂ ಇವರೊಡನೆ ಕೈ ಜೋಡಿಸಿದರು. ತಂದೆ ಜಹಗೀರಾದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲೆ ಅದೇ ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಸನಿಹವಿದ್ದ ಮರೆಯಲಾಗದ ಮಹಾಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವಾದ ವಿಜಯನಗರವನ್ನು ಅದರ ಅವಶೇಷಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದರು ಯುವಕ ಶಿವಾಜಿ.

ಒಂದು ಸಲ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಒಂದು ಕೋಟೆಯಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕೋಟೆಗೆ ಹೊಗುವಾಗ ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿದರು. ಆಗ ಅವರು ಒಂದು ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಏರಿ ಯಾವುದಾದರು ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಇದೆಯಾ ಎಂದು ನೋಡಿದರು, ಆದರೆ ಯಾವ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯೂ ಕಾಣಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅವರು ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಇಳಿದು ಬರುವಾಗ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ದೀಪವೊಂದು ಮಿಣುಕುವುದು ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅದೇ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋದಾಗ ಅವರು ಒಂದು ಗುಡಿಸಲಿನ ಬಳಿ ಬಂದರು. ಗುಡಿಸಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ವೃದ್ಧ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಇದ್ದಳು. ಅವಳು ಮಹಾರಾಜರನ್ನು ಒಬ್ಬ ಸೈನಿಕನಿರಬೇಕೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಿದಳು. ಅವನು ಹಸಿದಿರುವನೆಂದು ಅರಿತ ಮಹಿಳೆಯು ಕೈ ಕಾಲು ಮುಖ ತೊಳೆಯಲು ನೀರು ನೀಡಿದಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ರಮಿಸಲು ಚಾಪೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಸಿದಳು. ಅವನು ವಿಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ ಮಹಿಳೆಯು ಬಿಸಿ ಬಿಸಿ ಅನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಬಾರನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನಲು ನೀಡಿದಳು.

ತುಂಬಾ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಹಸಿದಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯು ತಕ್ಷಣ ತಿನ್ನಲು ಬಿಸಿ ಅನ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈ ಹಾಕಿದನು. ಬಿಸಿ ತಡೆಯಲಾರದೆ ಚೀರಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಅನ್ನವನ್ನು ಚಲ್ಲಿದನು. ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯು ಹೇಳಿದಳು, “ಅರೇ ನೀನು ಸಹ ನಿನ್ನ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯಂತೆ ಗಡಿಬಿಡಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀಯ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈ ಸುಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಅನ್ನವನ್ನು ಬೀಳಿಸಿದೆ”.

ಶಿವಾಜಿಯು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯದಿಂದ, “ನನ್ನ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಳ್ಮೆ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ನೀನು ಯಾಕೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತೀಯ?” ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದನು.

ಆಗ ಮಹಿಳೆಯು ಹೇಳಿದಳು, “ನೋಡು ಮಗನೆ, ಶಿವಾಜಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಗಡಿಬಿಡಿ ಇಂದಾಗಿ ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲುವ ಬದಲಾಗಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೋಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಲು ಹೊಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ವೀರ ಸೈನಿಕರನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಅದರ ಬದಲಿಗೆ ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ಮೊದಲು ಸಣ್ಣ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೋಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದರೆ ಅವನ ಬಲವೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸೈನಿಕರೂ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ನೀನು ಮೊದಲು ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ತಣ್ಣಗಿರುವ ಅನ್ನವನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ತಿನ್ನು”.
