ದುಷ್ಯಂತ,ಶಕುಂತಲೆ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ಕಥೆಯ ಪಾತ್ರ. ಶಕುಂತಲೆ ದುಷ್ಯಂತ ಮಹಾರಾಜನ ಪತ್ನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿ ಭರತನ ತಾಯಿ. ಮಹಾಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಥೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿಇದೆ. ಕಾಳಿದಾಸನು ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಶಾಕುಂತಲಮ್ ಎಂಬ ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಶಕುಂತಲೆಯ ಪಾತ್ರವು ಬರಹಗಾರರಿಂದ ನಾಟಕೀಯವಾಗಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ದುಶ್ಯಂತನು ತನ್ನ ಸೇನೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಾಡಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ತನ್ನ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾಸ್ತ್ರದಿಂದ ಗಾಯಗೊಂಡಂತಹ ಗಂಡು ಜಿಂಕೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ರಾಜ ಮೊದಲು ಶಕುಂತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಎದುರಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕಣ್ವ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳ ಆಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದ ದುಷ್ಯಂತ ಶಕುಂತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರೇಮಿಸಿ ಗಾಂಧರ್ವ ವಿವಾಹವಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವ ಮೊದಲು ದುಷ್ಯಂತ ತನ್ನ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಉಂಗುರವನ್ನು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ತನ್ನ ಅರಮನೆಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಭರವಸೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಶಕುಂತಲೆ ತನ್ನ ಗಂಡನ ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸದಾ ಮಗ್ನಳಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು.
ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿ ದೂರ್ವಾಸಮುನಿ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಬಲ ಋಷಿ, ಆಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರು ಆದರೆ ದುಶ್ಯಾಂತನ ಆಲೋಚನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳೆದಹೋಗಿದ್ದ ಶಕುಂತಲೆಗೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಫಲವಾದಳು. ಈ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಋಷಿಗಳು ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ನೀನು ಕನಸು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಮರೆತುಬಿಡಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ ಶಾಪವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಕೋಪದಿಂದ ಹೊರಟುಹೋದರು. ಅವಳು ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಷಮೆಯಾಚಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ನಂತರ ಮುನಿಗಳ ಕೋಪ ಹೊರಟುಹೋದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಮರೆತಿದ್ದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯು ನಿನಗೆ ನೀಡಲಾದ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಸಂಕೇತವಾದ ಉಂಗುರವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ತಾವು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಶಾಪವನ್ನು ಮಾರ್ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
