ಮಹಿಷ ಒಬ್ಬ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ, ಈಗಲೂ ಒಂದು ಮಾತು ಇದೆ, ಯಾರಾದರೂ ವಿಪರೀತ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಅವರನ್ನು ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಆಕೆಯ ಕಠೋರ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಹೊಮ್ಮುವ ಶಾಖ ಋಷಿಯೊಬ್ಬನ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಭಂಗ ತರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಕೋಪಾವಿಷ್ಠನಾದ ಋಷಿ ಜ್ಞಾನದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಮಾಲಿನಿ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. “ಮಹಿಷಿಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸಾನಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ನಿನ್ನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಿಷ ಅಂದರೆ ಕೋಣವೇ ಜನ್ಮತಾಳಲಿ” ಎಂದು ಶಪಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಇದರ ಫಲವೇ ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನ ಜನನ. ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರ ಬೆಳಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ವಿದ್ಯುನ್ಮಾಲಿ ದೇವೇಂದ್ರನ ಮೇಲೆ ಯುದ್ಧ ಸಾರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯುನ್ಮಾಲಿಯ ಸೇನೆ ಸೋತು, ಆತ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದರ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಾಲಕ ಮಹಿಷ ಹೊರಟಾಗ ಮಾಲಿನಿ ತಡೆದು, ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸಿ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಮಹಿಷನಿಗೆ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

ಅದರಂತೆ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸಿ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಪಳಗಿಸಬಲ್ಲ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನ ಹೊರತಾಗಿ ಬೇರಾರಿಂದಲೂ ಸಾವು ಬಾರದಂತಹ ವರ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ವರಬಲದಿಂದ ಕೊಬ್ಬಿದ ಮಹಿಷ ದೇವಾದಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರ ವರ ಪಡೆದ ನಂತರ ಜನರಿಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ತೊಂದರೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಒಂದು ಸಲ ಅವನು ಇಂದ್ರನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಯುದ್ಧವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ಅವನ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದನು. ಇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಗರ್ವವಾಯಿತು. ಅವನು ಎಲ್ಲರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟದಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ದಿನೇ ದಿನೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅವನ ಅನ್ಯಾಯವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಲಾರದೇ
ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಯಥಾಪ್ರಕಾರ ತ್ರಿಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳ ಮೊರೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತ್ರಿಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳು ಆದಿಮಾಯೆಯನ್ನು ಸ್ತುತಿಸಲು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆಗ ದೇವತೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲರು ತ್ರಿಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳಾದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ,ವಿಷ್ಣು ಮತ್ತು ಮಹೇಶ್ವರರನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಆಗ ಆ ಮೂವರು ಸೇರಿ ತಮ್ಮ ದೇಹದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಒಂದು ಹೊಸ ದೇವತೆಯನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದರು. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದೇವರ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಶಕ್ತಿಯು ಸೇರಿ ದುರ್ಗಾ ದೇವಿಯು ಅವತಾರವೆತ್ತಿದಳು.

ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ವಾಪಸಾದರು. ಮುಂದೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಬಾರಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರು ಸ್ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ದಾಳಿ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ದುರ್ಗಾ ದೇವಿಯ ಮೊರೆ ಹೋದರು. ಈಗಾಗಿ ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ನವರಾತ್ರಿ ಹಬ್ಬವು ದುರ್ಗಾ ದೇವಿಯ ವಿಜಯದ ನೆನಪಿಗಾಗಿ ಆಚರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಮೊದಲನೆ ದಿನ ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿ ಅಥವಾ ಮಹಾಕಾಳಿಯ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಒಂಬತ್ತು ದಿವಸ ದೇವಿಯ ಉತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಶೈಲ ಪುತ್ರಿ
ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಮೊದಲನೇ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಈ ದಿನ ಶೈಲಪುತ್ರಿಯ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶೈಲಪುತ್ರಿಯೆಂದರೆ ಪರ್ವತರಾಜನ ಮಗಳು ಎಂದರ್ಥ, ಈಶ್ವರನ ಪತ್ನಿಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಶೈಲ ಪುತ್ರಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಿ
ಎರಡನೇ ದಿನ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಿಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಿಮಾಲಯನ ಪುತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ದೇವಿಯು ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಪಡೆಯಲು ನಾರದರ ಉಪದೇಶದಂತೆ ಕಠಿಣ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಬಹಳ ಕಠಿಣವಾದ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದಾಗಿ ದೇವಿಗೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀ ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂತು.

ಚಂದ್ರ ಘಂಟ ದೇವಿ
ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಮೂರನೇ ದಿನ ಚಂದ್ರಘಂಟ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದುರ್ಗಾಮಾತೆಯ ವೈವಾಹಿಕ ಅವತಾರವಾಗಿರುವ ಚಂದ್ರಘಂಟೆಯನ್ನು ದುರ್ಗಾ ಮಾತೆಯ ರೌದ್ರ ಸ್ವರೂಪವೆಂಬುದಾಗಿಯೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕೂಷ್ಮಾಂಡ ದೇವಿ
ಚತುರ್ಥಿ ಅಥವಾ ನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ದಿನದಂದು ದೇವಿಯು ಕೂಷ್ಮಾಂಡಿನಿಯ ಅವತಾರವೆತ್ತುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಕೂಷ್ಮಾಂಡಿನಿಯನ್ನು ಈ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಂಟು ಭುಜಗಳಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಅಷ್ಟಭುಜಾದೇವಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸ್ಕಂದ ಮಾತೆ
ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಐದನೇ ದಿನದಂದು ದುರ್ಗೆಯ ಐದನೇ ಅವತಾರವಾಗಿರುವ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಮಾತೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಕಂದ ಎಂದರೆ ಕಾರ್ತಿಕೇಯ ಅಥವಾ ಮುರುಗನ್‌. ಕಾರ್ತಿಕೇಯನ ತಾಯಿಯೇ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಮಾತೆ. ಕಾರ್ತಿಕೇಯನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ತೊಡೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೂರಿಸಿರುವ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಿಯು ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿ
ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಆರನೇ ದಿನ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯನ್‌ ಎನ್ನುವ ಋಷಿಯು ಪಾರ್ವತಿ ದೇವಿಯಂತಹ ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಆಶಿಸಿ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಋಷಿಯ ಭಕ್ತಿಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿದ ದುರ್ಗಾ ಮಾತೆಯು ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅಂತೆಯೇ ಮಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟರು. ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿಯು ದೊಡ್ಡವಳಾದ ನಂತರ ತನ್ನ ಹತ್ತು ಕೈಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಹಿಡಿದು ದುಷ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ಎಸಗುವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ನಾಶ ಮಾಡಲು ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಸುತ್ತಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದಳು. ದುಷ್ಟ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಸಂಹಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿಯು ಅವತರಿಸಿ ಬಂದಳು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕಾಳ ರಾತ್ರಿ
ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಏಳನೇ ದಿನದಂದು ತಾಯಿ ಕಾಲರಾತ್ರಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು. ಈ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಯಿಯು ತುಂಬಾ ರೌದ್ರಾವತಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಕಪ್ಪಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಹೆಸರೇ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ ಇದು ತಾಯಿಯ ಕರ್ಗತ್ತಲು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಯದ ರೂಪವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಮಹಾ ಗೌರಿ
ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಎಂಟನೇ ದಿನದಂದು ಮಹಾಗೌರಿ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಹಾಗೌರಿಯು ತನ್ನ 16ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನ ಯೌವ್ವನೆಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಗೌರಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಆಕೆಯು ಗಿರಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪರ್ವತದ ಮಗಳೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಗೂಳಿ ಮೇಲೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುವ ಗೌರಿ ತನ್ನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ತ್ರಿಶೂಲದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಢಮರುವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
