ಕಾಳಿ ದೇವಿ, ಕಾಳಿಕಾ ಎಂದೂ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ. ಇದು ಅನಂತ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಹಿಂದೂ ದೇವತೆ. ಕಾಳಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರು ಕಾಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದರಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಇದರರ್ಥ ಕಪ್ಪು, ಕಾಲ ,ಮರಣ, ಸಾವಿನ ದೇವರು, ಶಿವ. ಕಾಳಿ ಎನ್ನುವುದರ ಅರ್ಥ “ಕಪ್ಪಗಿರುವುದು”. ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಕಾಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದರಿಂದ -ಅನಂತ ಕಾಲ, ಕಾಳಿ ಆತನ ಪತ್ನಿ, “ಸಮಯ” ಅಥವಾ “ಸಾವು” ಎನ್ನುವ ಅರ್ಥಗಳೂ ಇವೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಕಾಳಿಯು ಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಯ ದೇವತೆ. ಹೀಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಪ್ಪಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ರೌದ್ರಾಕಾರವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಳು. ಅವಳ ಮೊತ್ತಮೊದಲ ಅವತಾರ ಸರ್ವನಾಶಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಸ್ವರೂಪಿಣಿಯದು, ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಭಾವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ವಿವಿಧ ಶಾಕ್ತ ಹಿಂದೂ ವಿಶ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ಶಾಕ್ತ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕೆಯನ್ನೇ ಪರಮಸತ್ಯ ಅಥವಾ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ಎಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವಳನ್ನು ಭವತಾರಿಣಿ ಎಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಪಂಥದವರು ಕಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಮಂಗಳವನ್ನುಂಟುವಾಡುವ ಮಹಾಮಾತೆ ಮಹಾದೇವಿ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕಾಳಿಯು ಭಗವಂತ ಶಿವನ ಜೊತೆಗಾರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಶಿವನ ಶರೀರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಾಳಿ ನಿಂತಿರುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ದುರ್ಗಾ, ಭದ್ರಕಾಳಿ, ಸತಿ, ರುದ್ರಾಣಿ, ಪಾರ್ವತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಚಾಮುಂಡಾ ಮುಂತಾದ ಇನ್ನೂ ಅನೇಕ ಹಿಂದೂ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೂ ಆಕೆಯ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿದೆ. ದಶ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಗಳು, ಹತ್ತು ಭೀಕರ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ದೇವಿಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕೆ ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.
