ಮೊದಲು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಚಾಲೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿತ್ತು. ಬಹುಶಃ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಅಧಿದೇವತೆ ಮಂಚಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೆಯಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿರಬಹುದು. ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವಿನ ರಾಜ್ಯವಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮಂಚಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೆ ಆತನ ಕುಲದೇವತೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದಳೆಂದೂ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಕುಲದೇವತೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತ ಯಜ್ಞ ನಡೆಸಿದನೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ದ್ವಾಪರಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಂಡವರು ಅಶ್ವಮೇಧಯಾಗ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ ಚೈತ್ರಯಾತ್ರೆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೂ ಅನುಸಾಲ್ವನಿಗೂ ಇದೇ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಯುದ್ಧ ನಡೆಯಿತೆಂದೂ ಆಗ ಅನುಸಾಲ್ವನ ರಥ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದ ಯಜ್ಞ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ಈತನನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸುವುದು ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಸೂಚನೆಯಂತೆ ಅರ್ಜುನ ರಥವನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅನಸಾಲ್ವನ ರಥ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಂದು ಈತ ಸೋತುಹೋದನೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಇದು ವಿಜಯದ ಸ್ಥಾನವೆಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಮಠ ಹಾಗೂ ಬೃಂದಾವನವಿದೆ. ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಗುರುಸಾರ್ವಭೌಮರು ಮಧ್ವಮತ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯವನ್ನು ಅವಲಂಬಿಸಿ ಸಶರೀರರಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೃಂದಾವನಸ್ಥರಾದರು. ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. 1671 ಶ್ರಾವಣ ಬಹುಳ ಬಿದಿಗೆ ಗುರುವಾರ,ಎನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇವರನ್ನು ಗುರುಸಾರ್ವಭೌಮರು, ರಾಯರು, ಮಂತ್ರಾಲಯ ಪ್ರಭುಗಳು ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಯರ ಬೃಂದಾವನದ ಎಡಗಡೆ ವಾದೀಂದ್ರರ ಬೃಂದಾವನವಿದೆ. ಮಠದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಧರ್ಮೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಸುವೃತೀಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳವರ ಬೃಂದಾವನಗಳೂ ಇವೆ. ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಬೃಂದಾವನದ ಎದುರಿಗೆ ವಾಯುದೇವರ ವಿಗ್ರಹವಿದೆ. ಮಠದ ಹೊರಗಡೆ ಎಡಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಚಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೆಯ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವಿದೆ. ಈ ಗ್ರಾಮ ರಾಯರ ನೆಲಸುವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಎನಿಸಿದೆ.
ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಮಾಧ್ವ ಸಂನ್ಯಾಸಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖರು. ಅವರು ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಅನುಯಾಯಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಧ್ವ ಮತದ ದ್ವೈತ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದ ರಾಯರ ಮೂರನೇ ಅವತಾರವೇ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರರು. ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅವತಾರವು ಶ್ರೀ ವ್ಯಾಸರಾಯರು. ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರು ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳನ್ನು ಭಕ್ತರು ರಾಯರು, ಗುರುರಾಯರು, ಗುರುರಾಜರು ಎಂದು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಸಹಸ್ರಾರು ಯಾತ್ರಿಕರು ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ನದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿಂದು ರಾಯರ ಸೇವೆಗೈದು ತಮ್ಮ ಇಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ರಾಯರಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಧರ್ಮದರ್ಶಿಗಳ ಒಂದು ಸಮಿತಿ ಇದೆ. ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶ 1792ರ ತನಕ ಮುಸಲ್ಮಾನ್ ಆಳರಸರ ವಶದಲ್ಲಿತ್ತು. ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಮೈಸೂರು ಯುದ್ಧದ ತರುವಾಯ ಹೈದರಾಬಾದ್ ನಿಜಾಮರ ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. 1630ರ ಸುಮಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಸದಿಲ್ಲೀಖಾನ್ ಈ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ನವಾಬನಾಗಿದ್ದ. ಈತನ ದಿವಾನ ವೆಂಕಣ್ಣಪಂಡಿತರಾಯರ ಭಕ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದ.
ತೀರ್ಥಾಟನೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಯರು ಆದವಾನಿಗೂ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದರು. ನವಾಬ ರಾಯರ ತಪಃ ಶಕ್ತಿಗೆ ಮಾರುಹೋಗಿ ಅವರು ಕೇಳಿದ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಜಹಗೀರು ಕೊಡುವುದಾಗಿ ವಚನವಿತ್ತ. ಆಗ ರಾಯರು ಮಂಜಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ದಾನರೂಪವಾಗಿ ಕೊಡುವಂತೆ ನವಾಬನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದ್ದ ವೆಂಕಣ್ಣಪಂಡಿತ ಅಚ್ಚರಿಯಿಂದ ಬರೀ ಮರಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಡಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ನಿರುಪಯುಕ್ತ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಬಯಸಿದಿರಿ ಎಂದು ರಾಯರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ರಾಯರು ತಾನೇ ಆ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನಾಗಿದ್ದು ಯಜ್ಞಮಾಡಿದ ಜಾಗ ಅದೆಂದು ಅದರ ಮಹತ್ತ್ವ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರಂತೆ. ಆ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅದು ಒಬ್ಬ ಫಕೀರನ ವಶದಲ್ಲಿರಲಾಗಿ ವೆಂಕಣ್ಣ ದಿವಾನ ಅದನ್ನು ಆತನಿಂದ ಬಿಡಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟುದಲ್ಲದೆ ನವಾಬನ ಹಣದಿಂದಲೇ ಮಠವನ್ನೂ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟನೆಂದು ಐತಿಹ್ಯ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ರಾಯರ ಬೃಂದಾವನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಅವರು ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಯಜ್ಞ ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
1971ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಮೂರನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ವಿಜೃಂಭಣೆಯಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.

ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ವಿದ್ದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬ ಬಡ ವಿದ್ದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ತನ್ನ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಹೊರಡುವಾಗ ರಾಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು, ತನ್ನ ಬಡತನದ ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಅವರ ಬಳಿ ತೋಡಿಕೊಂಡು ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಸ್ನಾನದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ರಾಯರು ತಮ್ಮ ಬಳಿ ಕೊಡಲು ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲವೆಂದರು. ಆಗ ತಾವು ಏನು ಕೊಟ್ಟರು ನನಗೆ ಮಹಾ ಪ್ರಸಾದವೆಂದು ಒಂದು ಹಿಡಿ ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನದರು ತಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ದಯಪಾಲಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಬೇಡಿದನು. ಅದಕ್ಕವರು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನೆ ವಿದ್ದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯು ಮಹಾ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ವೆಂದು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಊರಿನ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಹೊರಟನು. ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತಲಾಗಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಮನೆಯ ಜಗಲಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಮನೆಮಾಲಿಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪ್ಪಣೆ ಪಡೆದು ಮಲಗಿದನು. ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಲಿಕನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಳು. ಮಧ್ಯರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯು ಆ ಮನೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ, ಹುಟ್ಟಲಿರುವ ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲಬೇಕೆಂದು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಜಗಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲಗಿದ ಭಕ್ತನ ಬಳಿಯಿರುವ ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆ ದಾಟಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದಾಗ ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆ ಬೆಂಕಿಯಂತೆ ಕಂಡು ಬಂದಿತು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಗಾಬರಿಗೊಂಡ ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯು ಭಕ್ತನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆ ದೂರ ಎಸೆಯಲು ಹೇಳಿತು. ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಹೆದರಿದ ಭಕ್ತನು ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನು ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಸೆದನು. ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಿಂದ ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯು ಚೀರುತ್ತಾ ಅಲ್ಲೆ ಸುಟ್ಟು ಬೂದಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಅದರ ಚೀತ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಮನೆ ಮಂದಿಯಲ್ಲ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬಂದು ಅವಕ್ಕಾದರು. ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲೆ ಮನೆಯೊಡತಿಗೆ ಮಗುವಾದ ಸಂತಸದ ಸುದ್ದಿ ತಿಳಿಯಿತು. ರಾಯರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮಂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷತೆಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ದುಷ್ಟ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ನಾಶವಾಯಿತು.
