ಉಸುಕು ಮತ್ತು ಜೌಗುಳ್ಳ ಹಳ್ಳಕೊಳ್ಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಂಪು ಗುಂಪಾಗಿ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಕವಲೊಡೆದು ದಪ್ಪನಾದ ಕಾಂಡದ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಬೇರೂರಿ ೧೦ ಮೀ. ವರೆಗೆ ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪೊದರು ಇದು. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಎಲೆಗಳು ೧ ರಿಂದ ೨ ಮೀ. ಉದ್ದವಿದ್ದು ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ದಿಂಡು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು ಖಡ್ಗದಂತಿರುವ ಒರಟು ಎಲೆಗಳು. ಅಲಗಿನಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮುಳ್ಳುಗಳನ್ನು ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ನಡುನರದ ಮುಳ್ಳು ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಾಚಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಎಲೆಗಳು ಕೊಂಬೆಗಳ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಳದಂತೆ ಸುತ್ತುವರಿದು ಜೋಡಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೂಗಳು ಏಕಲಿಂಗ, ತೆನೆಗಳಂತೆ ಹೂಗೊಂಚಲನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಏಕಲಿಂಗ ಮರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಗಂಡು ಹೂವಿನ ತೆನೆ ಉದ್ದವಾಗಿದ್ದು ೩ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸುವಾಸನೆಯುಳ್ಳ ೧ ಮೀ. ಉದ್ದದ ಹಳದಿ ಆಕರ್ಷಕ ಪತ್ರಗಳು ಆವೃತವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದರ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಸರ ದಂಡಗಳು ಕೂಡಿಕೊಂಡು, ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಕೇಸರ ಕೊಳವೆ ೧ ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ. ಉದ್ದ, ಬಿಳಿ ಮಿಶ್ರಿತ ಬಣ್ಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಸುವಾಸನೆಯುಳ್ಳವು. ಒಂಟಿಯಾದ ಸ್ಟೇಡಿಕ್ಸ್‌ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಹೂ ಗೊಂಚಲು ೭-೮ ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ. ವ್ಯಾಸ, ೪-೧೦ ಕಾರ್ಪೆಲ್ಲುಗಳಿದ್ದು ೭.೫ ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ. ಉದ್ದವಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೂವುಗಳು ಸುಮಾರು ಹತ್ತು ದಳಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಲಿತಾಗ ಅನಾನಸ್ಸಿನಂತಹ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಫಲ ಬಿಡುತ್ತವೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಅವು ಮುಳ್ಳು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು, ೯ ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ.-೨೫ ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ. ಉದ್ದವಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಅವುಗಳ ತುದಿ ದುಂಡಾಗಿದ್ದು, ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಗ್ಗಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬಲಿತಾಗ ಹಳದಿ ಅಥವಾ ಕೆಂಪಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾಂಡವು ವಾಯು ಬೇರುಗಳು ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿಂತಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸಸ್ಯದ ಪುನರುತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೇವವುಳ್ಳ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊನೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೆಡುವುದರಿಂದ, ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಅಥವಾ ನೀರಿನ ದಂಡೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಬಹುದು.
ಸುವಾಸನೆಯ ಪುಷ್ಪ ಪತ್ರಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಾಷ್ಪೀಕರಿಸಿ ‘ಕಿವಡಾ’ ಸುಗಂಧ ತೈಲವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ . ಈ ತೈಲವನ್ನು ಅತ್ತರು, ಸುಗಂಧ ತೈಲಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಸಾಬೂನು ತಯಾರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೆಲ ಕೇಶಾಲಂಕಾರಕಗಳನ್ನು ಸುವಾಸನೆಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪುಷ್ಪ ಪತ್ರಕಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂಜೆಗೆ, ಹೆಂಗಸರು ಮುಡಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಚಾಪೆ, ಸಕ್ಕರೆ, ಚೀಲ, ಕುಂಚವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಟೋಪಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎಳೆಯ ಕಾಯನ್ನು ತರಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎಲೆಗಳು ಖಾರವಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ, ಕುಷ್ಠರೋಗ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಲವು ಅಂಟು ರೋಗಗಳನ್ನು ವಾಸಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಿದ್ರಾಜನಕವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕಫದ ನಿವಾರಣೆಗೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪತ್ರದ ತೈಲವನ್ನು ಪಾಂಡು ರೋಗ, ಹೃದ್ರೋಗ, ಮೆದುಳು ರೋಗ ಮತ್ತು ತಂಪಿಗೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪತ್ರಕದ ತೈಲವನ್ನು ಸ್ನಾಯು ಸೆಳೆತ, ತಲೆ ನೋವು, ನರಗಳ ದೌರ್ಬಲ್ಯತೆ ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಲು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೇರಿನ ತೈಲವನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಔಷಧಿಯುಕ್ತ ಎಣ್ಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ನೀರಿನ ಆಸರೆ ಇರುವ ಕಡೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಗಿಡ. ಎಲೆಗಳು ಉದ್ದವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಗರಿ ಆಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಚೂಪಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಎಲೆಯ ಅಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳ್ಳುಗಳು ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಸುವಾಸನೆಯುಳ್ಳ ಹಳದಿ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಹೂವುಗಳು ಬಿಡುತ್ತವೆ, ಇದನ್ನು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಡಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಕೇದಿಗೆ ಹೂಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದು ಎಳ್ಳೆಣ್ಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕಿ, ಮುಂದಾಗ್ನಿಯಿಂದ ಕಾಯಿಸುವುದು, ಎಣ್ಣೆತಣ್ಣಗಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶೋಧಿಸಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವುದು, ತಲೆನೋವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಣೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ವಾಸಕೋಶಗಳ ತೊಂದರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎದೆಗೆ ಸವರುವುದು. ಈ ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನುಇಡೀ ಶರೀರಕ್ಕೆ ಹಚ್ಚುವುದರಿಂದ ನರಗಳು ಉತ್ತೇಜನಗೊಂಡು ಸೋಮಾರಿತನ ಮತ್ತು ಜಡತ್ವ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗುವುದು. ಬೇರನ್ನು ಅರೆದು ಸಿಡುಬು ಮತ್ತು ಕುಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾಧಿಯ ಹುಣ್ಣುಗಳಿಗೆ ಲೇಪಿಸಲು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೇರನ್ನು ಅರೆದು ಲೇಪಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ವಾತದಿಂದಾಗುವ ನೋವುಗಳು ಗುಣವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಣಗಿದ ಎಲೆಗಳ ಪುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಅಥವಾ ಚಕ್ಕೆಯ ಸುಟ್ಟ ಬೂದಿಯನ್ನು ಗಾಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಲೇಪಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಶೀಘ್ರ ಗುಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸಂದಿವಾತದ ಉರಿ ಮತ್ತು ನೋವಿನ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಲೇಪಿಸಬಹುದು.ಬೇರಿನ ಕಷಾಯವನ್ನು ಕಾಮಾಲೆ ರೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.ಬೀಜಗಳ ಕಷಾಯವು ಕರುಳಿನ ತೊಂದರೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಿವಾರಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಕಾರಿ.
ಸರ್ಪದ ವಿಷಕ್ಕೆ
ಸರ್ಪ ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾಗ ಪ್ರಥಮಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯಾಗಿ ಈ ಉಪಚಾರ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ. ಬಲಿತ ಬೇರು ತಂದು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತೇದು, ಸರ್ಪಕಚ್ಚಿರುವ ಕಡೆ ಪಟ್ಟು ಹಾಕುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಧ ಟೀ ಚಮಚ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕದಡಿ ಕುಡಿಯುವುದು.
ಉದರ ಶೂಲೆ
ಕೇದಿಗೆ ಗಿಡದ ಹೂವಿನ ಹಳದಿ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದು, ನೆರಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಣಗಿಸಿ ಸುಟ್ಟು ಬೂದಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು.ಈ ಬೂದಿಯ ಕಾಲು ಟೀ ಚಮಚದಷ್ಟನ್ನು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕದಡಿ ಜೇನುತುಪ್ಪ ಮತ್ತು ತುಪ್ಪ ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಕುಡಿಸುವುದು.
ಕೇದಗೆಯು ಪ್ಯಾಂಡನೇಸೀ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಒಂದು ಸಸ್ಯ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ತಾಳೆಗಿಡ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರೂ ಇದೆ. ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಕ್ರೂ ಪೈನ್ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಹೆಸರು ಪ್ಯಾಂಡಾನಸ್ ಓಡರೇಟಿಸಿಮಸ್, ಸುವಾಸನಾಯುಕ್ತವಾದ ಹೂಗೊಂಚಲಿನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಬಹಳ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ತೇವಪೂರಿತ ಉಷ್ಣಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲ ಇದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ. ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಫ್ರಿಕದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೆಸಿಫಿಕ್ ದ್ವೀಪಗಳವರೆಗೂ ಇದರ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿ ಇದೆ.
ಕೇದಗೆ ಸ್ವಾಭಾವಿಕವಾಗಿ ನದಿ, ಹಳ್ಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಮುದ್ರಗಳ ದಂಡೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೊಲಗದ್ದೆಗಳ ಇಕ್ಕೆಲಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಕಂಡುಬರುವುದುಂಟು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಇದರ ಕೆಲವು ಬಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅಲಂಕಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಸುವಾಸನಾಯುಕ್ತ ಗುಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಇವುಗಳಿಂದ ತೆಗೆಯಲಾಗುವ ಸುಗಂಧದ್ರವ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸುವುದೂ ಉಂಟು. ಕೇದಗೆ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ಹರಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಹಾಗೂ ನಿತ್ಯಹಸಿರಾಗಿರುವ ಸಸ್ಯ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಬಗೆಗಳಿದ್ದು ಕೆಲವು ಪೊದೆಸಸ್ಯಗಳಾಗಿಯೂ ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮರಗಳಾಗಿಯೊ ಬೆಳೆಯುವುದುಂಟು. ಕೆಲವು ಬಗೆಗಳ ಎಲೆಗಳ ಅಂಚು ಮುಳ್ಳಿನಂತಿದ್ದರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವು ಬಗೆಗಳ ಎಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳ್ಳುಗಳೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ವಿವಿಧ ಬಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರಭೇದಗಳೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿರುವುದಲ್ಲದೆ ಕೇದಗೆಯನ್ನು ಬಹುರೂಪಿ ಸಸ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಸಹ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೇದಗೆಯ ವಿವಿಧ ಬಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಗೆಗಳ ಕ್ರಮಬದ್ಧ ಅಂತಸ್ತಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ.
ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಪ್ರಭೇದವೂ ಇದನ್ನೇ ಬಹುವಾಗಿ ಹೋಲುವ ಇನ್ನಿತರ 35 ಪ್ರಭೇದಗಳೂ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಉಳಿದ ಪ್ರಭೇದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದವು-ಪ್ಯಾಂಡೇನಸ್ ಫೀಟಿಡಸ್ ಪ್ಯಾ, ಫರ್ಕೇಟಸ್, ಪ್ಯಾ, ಲಿರಾಮ್ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ಯಾ, ಅಂಡಮಾನೆನ್ಸಿಯಮ್ ಇವೆಲ್ಲಕ್ಕೂ ರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇದಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರೇ ಇದೆ.
