ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ಅಂದರೆ ರಾಜಮೌಳಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಜೈನಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದ ಹೆಸರು. ಹೌದು ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ, ಜೈನ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬರುವ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಹೆಸರು. ಶ್ರವಣ ಬೆಳಗೊಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಾಮುಂಡರಾಯ ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಿದ ೫೮ ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಏಕಶಿಲಾ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆ ಇದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ೧೨ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಗೆ ಮಹಾ ಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕವನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ- ಆದಿ ತೀರ್ಥಂಕರನಾದ ವೃಷಭನಾಥನ ಕಿರಿಯ ಮಗ. ದೋರ್ಬಲಿ, ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ, ಕುಕ್ಕಟೇಶ್ವರ-ಇವು ಪರ್ಯಾಯನಾಮಗಳು.
ಜೈನ ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿದ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ತೀರ್ಥಂಕರರು ವೃಷಭನಾಥರು. ಇವರಿಗೆ ಸುನಂದ ಮತ್ತು ನಂದಾ ಎಂಬ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪತ್ನಿಯರು. ಇವರಿಂದ ನೂರುಜನ ಗಂಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳೂ ಮತ್ತು ಇಬ್ಬರು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳೂ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯು ಸುನಂದೆಯ ಮಗ. ವೃಷಭನಾಥರಿಗೆ ವೈರಾಗ್ಯ ಉಂಟಾದಾಗ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದರು. ಸಕಲ ಕರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಜಯಿಸಿ ಕೇವಲಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಜನರಿಗೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಪ್ರಥಮ ಪುತ್ರನಾದ ಭರತನು ದಿಗ್ವಿಜಯವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿಸಿಬರುವಾಗ ಆತನ ಚಕ್ರರತ್ನವು ಪುರ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಭರತನು ತನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರನ್ನು ಜಯಿಸಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಪುರೊಹಿತರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಕಾಣಿಕೆಗಳೊಡನೆ ಬರುವಂತೆ ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿಕಳಿಸಿದಾಗ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯನ್ನುಳಿದು ಇತರರು ವೃಷಭನಾಥರ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ ದೀಕ್ಷೆ ಪಡೆದರು.
ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯು ತಂದೆಯ ಹೊರತು ಇನ್ನಾರಿಗೂ ತಲೆ ಬಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ತಂದೆಯಿಂದ ತನಗೆ ದೊರೆತ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದೂ, ಇದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಸಹ ಸಿದ್ಧನೆಂದು ಭರತನ ದೂತರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿಕಳಿಸಿದನು. ಭರತನು ಈ ಸುದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿದ್ಧನಾದನು. ಎರಡೂ ಸ್ಯೆನ್ಯಗಳು ಯುದ್ಧ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ಭರತ, ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ವಜ್ರದೇಹಿಗಳಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ವೃಥಾ ಸ್ಯೆನ್ಯ ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದಲ್ಲದೆ ಈ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಏನೂ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಇಬ್ಬರ ಮಧ್ಯೆಯೆ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯುದ್ಧ, ಜಲಯುದ್ಧ ಮತ್ತು ಮಲ್ಲಯುದ್ಧ ನಡೆಯಲಿ ಎಂದು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿದರು.
ಕಣ್ಣ ರೆಪ್ಪೆಯಾಡಿಸದೆ ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರು ನೋಡುವುದು ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯುದ್ಧ. ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ತಾಗುವಂತೆ ನೀರೆರೆಚುವುದು ಜಲಯುದ್ಧ. ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಬಾಹು ಯುದ್ಧ ಜಟ್ಟಿಕಾಳಗ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಮಲ್ಲಯುದ್ಧ. ಈ ಮೂರೂ ಯುದ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ವೀರನಾದ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯೇ ಗೆದ್ದನು. ಅಣ್ಣ ಭರತನನ್ನು ಮಲ್ಲಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲೆತ್ತಿದ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಗೆ ತಾನು ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡಬಾರದೆಂದೆನಿಸಿ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿಸಿದನು. ಅವಮಾನ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಭರತನು ತನ್ನ ಚಕ್ರವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಯೋಗಿಸಿದರೂ ಸಹ ಅದು ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಅವನ ಬಲಗಡೆ ಬಂದು ನಿಂತಿತು.
ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ವಿಜಯಿಯಾದನು. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಜಯಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಗೆ ವೈರಾಗ್ಯ ಉಂಟಾಗಿ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ತೊರೆದು ತಂದೆ ವೃಷಭನಾಥರ ಬಳಿ ದೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ತೊಡಗಿದನು.
ಬಹುಕಾಲ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಆಚರಿಸಿದರೂ ಕೇವಲ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ತಾನು ಅಣ್ಣನ ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿರುವೆನೆಂಬ ಚಿಂತೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದ ನಂತರ ಭರತನು ಈ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ನೀನು ಗೆದ್ದು ನನಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಭಾವನೆ ತೊರೆದು ಬಿಡು ಎಂದು ಬೇಡಿದನು. ನಂತರ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯು ನಿರ್ಮಲವಾದ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಕೇವಲಜ್ಞಾನ ಪಡೆದನು.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯ ಬೃಹತ್ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳು ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳಗೊಳ, ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳ, ವೇಣೂರು, ಕಾರ್ಕಳ, ಮೈಸೂರು ಬಳಿಯ ಗೋಮಟಗಿರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯ ಬೃಹತ್ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳಿವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಪ್ರತಿ 12 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮಹಾಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕ ನೆರವೇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಉಳಿದೆಲ್ಲ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದರೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾಗಿರುವ, ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಗೋಮಟಗಿರಿಯ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷವೂ ಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮೈಸೂರಿನಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 80 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ಅಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಸನಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಚೆನ್ನರಾಯಪಟ್ಟಣ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳ್ಗೊಳವೆಂಬ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಜೈನ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಶಿಲಾಲೇಖಗಳ ಮೇಲಿಂದ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತ ಮೌರ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ಗುರುವಾದ ಭದ್ರಬಾಹುವಿನ ಸಂಗಡ ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಸಲ್ಲೇಖನ ವ್ರತವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಮರಣವನ್ನು ಅಪ್ಪಿದನೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಊರು ಚಿಕ್ಕದು. ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶಾಂತವಾದ ಸರೋವರ ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ವಿಂಧ್ಯಗಿರಿ (ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬೆಟ್ಟ) ಮತ್ತು ಚಂದ್ರಗಿರಿ (ಚಿಕ್ಕಬೆಟ್ಟ) ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ದಿಬ್ಬಗಳಿವೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಸುತ್ತಾಲಯದ ನಡುವೆ ಅಖಂಡ ಶಿಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಿದ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯ 58′ ಎತ್ತರದ ಭವ್ಯಮೂರ್ತಿ ಉತ್ತರಾಭಿಮುಖವಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದೆ. ಈ ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಬಾಹುಬಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಮಾಯೋಗವನ್ನು ಧಾರಣಮಾಡಿ, ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವನ್ನಿದು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಖಮುದ್ರೆ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತವೀರಾಗಭಾವವನ್ನು ಸೂಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾಲುಗಳ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕಮಲವಿದೆ. ಎರಡೂ ಬದಿಗೆ ಹಾವಿನ ಹುತ್ತಗಳಿವೆ. ಮಾಧವೀಲತೆ ಕೈಕಾಲುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಬ್ಬಿದೆ.
ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ಕಥೆಗಳು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಿವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ದೊರೆಯುವ ಶಿಲಾಲೇಖನದಿಂದ ಚಾವುಂಡರಾಯ ಇದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸಿದನೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈತ ಗಂಗವಂಶದ ರಾಚಮಲ್ಲನ ದಂಡಾಧಿಪತಿಯೂ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ. ಸುಮಾರು 982ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿರಬೇಕೆಂದು ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಸುರಕ್ಷಣೆಗಾಗಿ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನನ ದಂಡಾಧಿಪತಿಯಾದ ಗಂಗರಾಜ ಸುತ್ತಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ ಅಂತ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಮೇಲೆನ ಶಿಲಾಲೇಖನಗಳಿಂದ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಪೌದನಪುರದಲ್ಲಿಯ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆ ಆಗಮ್ಯವೆನಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ದರ್ಶಿಸಲೆಂದು ಚಾವುಂಡರಾಯ ಈ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಆಖ್ಯಾನಕವಿದೆ. ಈ ವಿಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದದ್ದು ಚಾವುಂಡರಾಯನಿಂದಲೇ. ನೇಮಿಚಂದ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ರಚಿತವಾದ ಗೊಮ್ಮಟಸಾರವೆಂಬ ಗ್ರಂಥದಿಂದ ಚಾವುಂಡರಾಯನಿಗೆ ಗೊಮ್ಮಟರಾಯನೆಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿದ್ದುದೂ ಆತ ಬೆಳ್ಗೊಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ ಬಸದಿಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಿದ ಈ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ವಿಷಯವೂ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಗೊಮ್ಮಟ ಅಂದರೆ ಸುಂದರ, ಚೆಲುವ ಮನ್ಮಥ ಎಂದರ್ಥ. ಇದು ಅವನ ಮನೆಯ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಆತ ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಿದ ಈಶ್ವರ ಅಂದರೆ ಆರಾಧ್ಯ ದೇವತೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಮುಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯ ಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳು, ಕಾರ್ಕಳ, ವೇಣೂರು ಮೊದಲಾದ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರನ ಈ ವಿಶಾಲಕಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಅದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯಿಂದ ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳ್ಗೊಳ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಯಾತ್ರಾಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ವಿಂಧ್ಯಗಿರಿಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಬೃಹತ್ಕಾಯದ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯ ಪೂಜೆಯೆಂದರೆ ಒಂದು ಮಹೋತ್ಸವವೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಪುಣ್ಯಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವೂ ಹೌದು. ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಮಹಾಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿ ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಒಂದು ವಿಶೇಷ ಮುಹೂರ್ತವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ, ನಡೆಸುವ ಪರಂಪರೆಯುಂಟು. ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳಗೋಳ 1398ರ ಶಿಲಾಲೇಖನದಿಂದ ಪಂಡಿತಾರ್ಯ ಏಳುಸಾರಿ ಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ ಸಂಗತಿಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ 1500ರಲ್ಲಿ 1612ರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. 1612ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಂತವರ್ಣೀ, 1677ರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಕ್ಕದೇವರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾದ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷ ಪಂಡಿತ 1825ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಸೂರು ಮಹಾರಾಜರಾದ ಮುಮ್ಮುಡಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರು ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ ಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕಗಳ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ ಉಂಟು. ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಭಾಗಗಳಿಂದ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಜೈನ ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕರು ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳಗೊಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಸ್ತಕಾಭಿಷೇಕದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳಗೊಳ ಜೈನರಿಗೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕಾಶಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.
