‘ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ’ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವುದು ಮಹಾಭಾರತ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಮೊದಲು. ತಮ್ಮ ಸೈನ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ರಣಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದಿರಾದ ಕೌರವರ ಸೇನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಬಂಧುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಅರ್ಜುನ ಉತ್ಸಾಹ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣನತ್ತ ತಿರುಗಿದಾಗ. ಆತ್ಮದ ಅಮರತ್ವದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸುತ್ತ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ‘ಗೀತೋಪದೇಶ’ವನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದರ ನಂತರ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಯೋಗಮಾರ್ಗಗಳಾದ ಭಕ್ತಿ, ಕರ್ಮ, ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನು ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಮಾರ್ಗಶಿರ ಮಾಸದ ಶುಕ್ಲಪಕ್ಷದ ಏಕಾದಶಿಯ ದಿನ ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿದನು. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಇದನ್ನು ಗೀತಾ ಜಯಂತಿ ಅಂತ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ರಾಮಾಯಣ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದುದು. ಈ ಬೃಹದ್ಕಾವ್ಯವು ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳಿಂದ ರಚಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ರಾಮಾಯಣವನ್ನು ತತ್ಪುರುಷ ಸಮಾಸವಾಗಿ ವಿಭಜಿಸಿದರೆ (ರಾಮನ+ಅಯನ=ರಾಮಾಯಣ) “ರಾಮನ ಕಥೆ” ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ರಾಮಾಯಣವು ೨೪೦೦೦ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಿಂದುಂಟಾದ ೭ ಕಾಂಡಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದೆ. ರಾಮಾಯಣದ ಕಥೆಯು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯೆಯ ಸೂರ್ಯವಂಶದ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ ರಾಮ, ಆತನ ಮಡದಿ ಸೀತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸೀತೆಯ ಅಪಹರಣ ಮಾಡಿದ ರಾವಣನ ಸಂಹಾರ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿದೆ. ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳಿಂದ ರಚಿತವಾದ ಈ ಕಾವ್ಯ ರಾಮನ ಮಕ್ಕಳಾದ ಲವ-ಕುಶರಿಂದ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಯಿತು. ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದಾದ ರಾಮಾಯಣವು ಭಾರತ ಉಪಖಂಡದ ಕಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಆಳವಾದ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಬೀರಿದೆ. ರಾಮನ ಕಥೆಯು ಅನೇಕ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಂತರದ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು.
ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿಯು ತನ್ನ ರಾಮಾಯಣದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಮನ ಮೂಲಕ ಮಾನವನ ಬಾಳುವೆಯ ರೀತಿಯ ಕುರಿತು ತನ್ನ ನೀತಿಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಜೀವನವು ಕ್ಷಣ ಭಂಗುರವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಭೋಗಲಾಲಸೆಯ ನೀತಿಯು ಅರ್ಥಹೀನವಾದದ್ದು. ಆದರೆ ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಯಾವುದೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯು ಪುರಾತನ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಹಕ್ಕುಬಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿಮುಖನಾಗಬಾರದು. ವೇದದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಕ್ತವಾದದ್ದೇ ಧರ್ಮ, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯು ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪಾಲಿಸಬೇಕೇ ಹೊರತು ಅದರಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಲಾಭ, ನಷ್ಟಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಅವನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.
ಇಂಥ ಧರ್ಮಪಾಲನೆಯಿಂದ ಇಹಲೋಕದಲ್ಲೂ ಪರಲೋಕದಲ್ಲೂ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣವಾಗುವುದು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ , ಯಾವುದೇ ಮಾತು ಕೊಡುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಯೋಚಿಸಬೇಕು ಮತ್ತು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾತು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗಲಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ರಾಮಾಯಣವು ಒತ್ತು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾರದ ಮುನಿಯು ಇಡೀ ರಾಮಾಯಣವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಸಂಕ್ಷೇಪ ರಾಮಾಯಣವು ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ರಾಮಾಯಣದ ಮೊದಲ ಸರ್ಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ನಾರದನು ಆದರ್ಶ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ೧೬ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಿ ರಾಮನು ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ೧೬ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಮಾನವ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿಯು ಅವನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅತಿಮಾನವ ಎಂದು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸದೆ, ಎಲ್ಲ ಗುಣ ದೋಷಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿ, ನೈತಿಕ ಸಂದಿಗ್ಧಗಳನ್ನೆದುರಿಸಿ ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಗೆದ್ದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಹಜ ಮಾನವನನ್ನಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ರಾಮಾಯಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಥಾನಾಯಕನ ಪರಿಶುದ್ಧ ಚಾರಿತ್ರ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಂಶಯವನ್ನುಂಟು ಮಾಡುವ ಅನೇಕ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಿವೆ.
