ಭಗವತಿ ಇದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮೂಲದ ಒಂದು ಪದವಾಗಿದೆ . ಈ ಪದವನ್ನು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಭ್ಯ ರೂಪವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಹರಿಸಲು ಅಥವಾ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಗೌರವಯುತ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಭಗವತಿಯ ಪುರುಷ ಸಮಾನ ಭಗವಾನ್. ದೇವಿ ಅಥವಾ ಈಶ್ವರಿ ಬದಲಿಗೆ “ಭಗವತಿ” ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವುದು.
“ತುಳು ನಾಡಿನ ಮಲಯಾಳಿ ಮಾತಾಡುವ ದೇವಿ” ಭಗವತಿ ದೇವಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಲು ಒಂದು ದಂತ ಕಥೆ ಇದೆ.
ಅವಿಭಜಿತ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಗೂ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯು ದೇವತೆಗಳ ನಾಡು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ಕಾರಣೀಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಹಾಗೂ ದೈವ-ದೇವತೆಗಳ ನೆಲೆಬೀಡು. ತುಳುವರು ದೇವರನ್ನು ಆರಾಧನೆ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ದೈವಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮವರಂತೆ ಆರಾಧನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ನೇಮ, ಕೋಲ, ಬೋಗ ಹಾಗೂ ನಡಾವಳಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತುಳುವನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿ ಮನೆ-ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ದೈವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ತರವಾಡು ಮನೆ ಅಥವಾ ಮೂಲ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನೇಮಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಬಲಿ – ಉತ್ಸವಾಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರುವ ಪದ್ದತಿ ಇದೆ.
ಹೀಗೆ ಜಾತಿಭೇಧವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಸಾಧಿಸಬಹುದೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಹಲವಾರು ಕಥನಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಪುರಾಣಗಳು ಸಾರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂಥಹ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಹಳೆಯಂಗಡಿಯಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ಕದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾಗಿದರೆ ಕಡಲ ತಡಿಯ ನಡುವೆ ಕಂಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಸಸಿಹಿತ್ಲು ಶ್ರೀ ಭಗವತಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ.
ಶ್ರೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ಇಂದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಾರಣಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಮಹಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಮಾತೃತೆ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಾದ ಭಗವತಿಯು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಿರಾಜಮಾನವಾಗಿ ಭಕ್ತರ ಕಾಯ್ವ ಮಹಾತಾಯಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಮಾತೆಯು ಬೇಡಿ ಬರುವ ಭಕ್ತರ ಪಾಲಿನ ಅಭಿಷ್ಠಪ್ರದಾಯಿನಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ
ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಪುರಾಣ ಹೀಗೆ ಇದೆ :
ಹಿಂದೆ ಶೋನಿತಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರಿಗಾಸುರನೆಂಬ ಮದಪ್ರಮತ್ತನಾದ ರಕ್ಕಸ ಭೂಮಂಡಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮರೆಯುತ್ತಿರಲು ದೇವಾನುದೇವತೆಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಜನರು ಮಹಾನ್ ದೈತ್ಯನಿಂದ ಕಷ್ಟ-ಕಾರ್ಪಣ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ತುತ್ತಾದರು. ದಾರಿಗಾಸುರನು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವನಿಂದ ವರವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಯೋನಿಜರಿಂದ ಸಾವು ಬರಬಾರದೆಂದು ಹಾಗೂ ಪುರುಷ ಜೀವಿಯಿಂದ ಸಾವು ಬರಬಾರದೆಂದು ಅಜೇಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದನು. ಅಂತೆಯೇ ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಡಿ ಸುದರ್ಶನ ಚಕ್ರವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ವಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದನು. ಹೀಗೆ ಭೂಮಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅನಾಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ದೇವತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ದೇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊರೆಯಿಟ್ಟರು. ಆಗ ಲೋಕದ ಒಡೆಯನಾದ ಪರಶಿವನು ಆದರೆ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಪುರಾಣಾನುಸಾರ ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣು – ಪರಶಿವ ಮತ್ತು ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಭೇದಗಳಿಲ್ಲ , ಚಿಂತಾಕ್ರಾಂತಾರಾಗಿರಲು ಶಿವನ ಕಂಗಳ ಹನಿಯಿಂದ ಸಪ್ತ ದುರ್ಗೆಯರು ಉದಿಸಿದರು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿಭಗವತಿಯು ಮೊದಲನೇಯವಳು. ಹೀಗೆ ಶಿವನ ಹಣೆಗಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಜನಿಸಿ ಬಂದ ಆದಿಪರಾಶಕ್ತಿಯಾದ ಭಗವತಿ ಸಮೇತ ಸಪ್ತ ದುರ್ಗೆಯರು ದುರುಳ ದಾನವನಾದ ದಾರಿಗಾಸುರನ ಮದವನ್ನು ಅಡಗಿಸಿ ಅವನ ಸಂಹಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಟರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗಿ ದಾರಿಗಾಸುರನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಸಾಗಿದ ಭಗವತಿಯು ಒಂದು ವೃದ್ದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯ ವೇಶವನ್ನು ಧಾರಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಅವನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಸುದರ್ಶನ ಚಕ್ರವನ್ನು ಉಪಾಯದಿಂದ ಅಸುರನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯಿಂದ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗಿದ ಭಗವತಿಯು ಭದ್ರಕಾಳಿಕೆಯ ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ತಾಳಿ ದಾರಿಗಾಸುರನ ವಧೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
ದುರುಳ ದಾನವನ ದಮನ ಮಾಡಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಭೋಲೊಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಸೋದರಿಯರೊಡಗೂಡಿ ಸತ್ಯಶೋಧನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿ ತಾವು ಮುಂದೆ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಬೇಕಾದ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಅರಸುತ್ತಾ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗುವ ವೇಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆದಿ ಭೇತಾಳನೆಂಬವನು ಅಡ್ಡಲಾಗಿ ಮಲಗಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮಾತೆಯು ಅವನನ್ನು ದಾರಿಬಿಡುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಅವನು ವಿರೋಧವನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಗ ಮಾತೆಯು ತನ್ನ ದಿವ್ಯಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಅವನಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆಗ ಆದಿವೇತಾಳನಾದ ಗುಳಿಗನು ಮಾತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಷಮೆಯಾಚಿಸಿ, ಅಮ್ಮ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನೆಂದು ಇರುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಎಂದಿಗೂ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಭಾಗ್ಯಾಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಕರುಣಿಸಿರಿ ಎಂದು ಬೇಡಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಭಗವತಿಯು ಆದಿವೇತಾಳನನ್ನು ನೀನು ನನ್ನ ಸೇವಕನಾಗಿ ನಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಇರು ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಘಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ಪಂಜನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಉರುಳುರುಳಿ ಬಂದ ‘ಪಂಜುರ್ಳಿ’ ದೈವವು ಮಾತೆಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯದೆ ಭಗವತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಮರಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಭಗವತಿ ತನ್ನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಆ ದೈವವನ್ನು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಆ ದೈವವು ಕೂಡಾ ಭಗವತಿಯೊಡಗೂಡಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗುವಾಗ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ದಾಟುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ದೋಣಿಯ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯು ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಒಂದು ಗಂಧದ ಮರವನ್ನು ದೋಣಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿಸಲು ಮುಂದಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆಗ ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಭೂಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರ್ಪಡಿಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಸಪ್ತ ದುರ್ಗೆಯರು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಂತೆ ಬಂದು ಒಬ್ಬ ಧನಿಕನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಧನಿಕನು ನೀವು ಹಣದ ಬದಲು ಬೇರೆ ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಇಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಅಂಹಂಕಾರದಿಂದ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಗ ಭಗವತಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಕಾಲಿನ ಗೆಜ್ಜೆಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹಣವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಧನಿಕನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಬರುವ ಮೊದಲು ಇದನ್ನು ನೀವು ಬಳಸಕೂಡದು ಎಂದು ಮುಂದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಧನಿಕನು ಭಗವತಿಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯದೆ ಅಹಂಕಾರದಿಂದ ಮಾತೆಯ ಕಾಲುಗೆಜ್ಜೆಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮಗನಿಗೆ ಕಾಲಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಮಗನಿಂದ ನೃತ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಕುಪಿಳಾದ ಭಗವತಿಯು ಧನಿಕನ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಮಾಯವಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಧಣಿಕ ಬೆರಗಾಗಿ ಮಾತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಳುತ್ತಾ ಅಮ್ಮಾ ನನ್ನ ಮಗನನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಮರಳಿಸು, ನಾನು ಮಾಡಿದ ತಪ್ಪಿನ ಅರಿವು ನನಗೆ ಆಗಿದೆ ಎಂದಾಗ ಮಾತೆಯು ಮುಂದೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಒಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಭಾಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕರುಣಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ ಮಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
ಗಂಧದ ದೋಣಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಭಗವತಿ ತನ್ನ ಸೋದರಿಯರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಪ್ರ ಸೇವಕ ಗುಳಿಕನ ಸಂಗಡವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುವಾಗ ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂಜುರ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ದೋಣಿ ನಡೆಸಲು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆಗ ಪಂಜುರ್ಳಿಯು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋಸವೆಸಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಗ ಭಗವತಿಯು ಉಗ್ರವಾಗಿ ಪಂಜುರ್ಳಿ ದೈವವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಕಾಲಿನಿಂದ ಘಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಎಸೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆ ದೈವವು ತನ್ನ ತಪ್ಪನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದು ತಾಯಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಷಮೇಯಾಚಿಸಿ ಅಮ್ಮನಲ್ಲಿ ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
