ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಮಾಜ ಸುಧಾರಕ, ತತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದವರು. ಇವರು ಬಿಜ್ಜಳ ಮಹಾರಾಜನ ಆಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ವಚನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ರಚಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸಿದರು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ ಕಾವ್ಯ ನಾಮ ಕೂಡಲ ಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.

ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ೧೧೩೪ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗಿನ ಬಿಜಾಪುರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬಸವನ ಬಾಗೇವಾಡಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ ತಾಯಿಯ ತವರು ಮನೆಯಾದ ಇಂಗಳೇಶ್ವರ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಕೂಡ ಇದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಮಾದರಸ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾದಲಾಂಬಿಕೆ ದಂಪತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣ ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ವೈದಿಕ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಕರ್ಮಾಚರಣೆಗಳ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅಕ್ಕ ನಾಗಮ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾವ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದರು. ಅವರ ೮ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಂತೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರಿಗೆ ಜನಿವಾರ ಹಾಕಲು ಬಂದಾಗ, ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ತನಗಿಂತ ಹಿರಿಯಳಾದ ಅಕ್ಕ ನಾಗಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಲು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಆಗ ಇದು ಪುರುಷರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕೊಡುವಂತಹುದು ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಕ್ಕನಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಲು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ ನುಡಿದಾಗ, ಬಸವಣ್ಣ ಪುರುಷ/ಮಹಿಳೆ ಅಸಮಾನತೆಯನ್ನು ವಿರೋಧಿಸಿ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಗಮಿಸಿ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಸವಣ್ಣ ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಕುಂಡಲಸಂಗಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೂ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ನಂತರ ಲಕುಲಿಶಾ-ಪಶುಪಾಟ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ಒಂದು ಶೈವ ಕಲಿಕೆಯ ಕಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಗಮೇಶ್ವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದರು ಬಸವ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಸೋದರ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಯನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾದ. ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಗಂಗಾಂಬಿಕೆ ಕಲಚುರಿ, ರಾಜ ಬಿಜ್ಜಳ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯ ಮಗಳು,

ಜಾತಿ, ಮತ, ಲಿಂಗಗಳ ಭೇದವನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದರು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರನ್ನು ಜಗಜ್ಯೋತಿ ಬಸವೇಶ್ವರ, ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಯೋಗಿ ಬಸವಣ್ಣ, ಭಕ್ತಿ ಭಂಡಾರಿ ಬಸವಣ್ಣ, ಮಹಾ ಮಾನವತಾ ವಾದಿ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಾನವಿಯತೆ. ಕಾಯಕ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಧರ್ಮದ ಬುನಾದಿಯಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಬಲವಾಗಿ ನಂಬಿದ್ದರು.
ಬಸವಣ್ಣ ತಮ್ಮ ವಚನಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾಯಕವೇ ಕೈಲಾಸ, ದಯವೇ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮೂಲವಯ್ಯ, ಅಯ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಎಲವೂ ಎಂದರೆ ನರಕ ಎಂದು ಸಾರುವ ಮೂಲಕ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಾನವಾತಾ ವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ವಚನಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ಅಪಾರ ಇದುವರೆಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು 1500 ವಚನಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿಡಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯಿಂದ ಹರಿಜನ ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆದ ಅನುಲೋಮ ವಿವಾಹ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣದ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಗೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಇವರು ಷಟ್ ಸ್ಥಲ ವಚನ, ಕಾಲಜ್ಞಾನ ವಚನ, ಮಂತ್ರಗೋಪ್ಯ, ಶಿಖಾರತ್ನ ವಚನ ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇವರನ್ನು ಕುರಿತಂತೆ ಕನ್ನಡ, ತೆಲುಗು, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ, ತಮಿಳು, ಮರಾಠಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪುರಾಣಗಳು ರಚನೆಯಾಗಿವೆ. ಬಾಗೇವಾಡಿ ಕಪ್ಪಡಿಸಂಗಮ, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಪಟ್ಟಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರ ಸ್ಮಾರಕಗಳಿವೆ.
