ಏಷ್ಟು ಮಂದಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಅನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರು ನಮ್ಮ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು? ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಈಗಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಸಂಶಯ. ಈಗಿನವರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿ ನೋಡಿ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಅಂದರೆ ಯಾರು? ನಿಮಗೆ ಬರುವ ಉತ್ತರ ಉಗ್ರಂ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಯಕ ಶ್ರೀಮುರುಳಿ ಹೆಸರು ಅಂತ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಸಪ್ತರ್ಷಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು. ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಮಹಾತಪಸ್ವಿ.
ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮಹರ್ಷಿ ವಾತಾಪಿಯನ್ನು ಜೀರ್ಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡವರು. ಇವರು ವಿಂಧ್ಯಪರ್ವತದ ಸೊಕ್ಕನ್ನು ಮುರಿದವರು. ಈ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಇಡೀ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮ ರಾವಣನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಯುದ್ಧ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮಹರ್ಷಿ ಬಂದು ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನಿಗೆ ಆದಿತ್ಯ ಹೃದಯ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರವನ್ನು ಉಪದೇಶ ಮಾಡಿದರು.
ವಸಿಷ್ಠ, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರರಂತೆ ಇವರೂ ಹಿರಿಯ ಋಷಿಗಳು. ಪುರಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರನ್ನು ‘ಕುಳ್ಳಮುನಿ’ ಎಂದು ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಆಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ಕುಬ್ಜರು! ಆದರೆ “ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾದರೂ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದು” ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಇವರಿಂದ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗಿರುವ ಉಪಕಾರಗಳು ಅಪಾರ.
ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಪುತ್ರ ಮರೀಚಿ. ಈ ಮರೀಚಿಯ ಮಗ ಕಶ್ಯಪ. ಈ ಕಶ್ಯಪರಿಗೆ ಅದಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿತ್ರಾವರುಣರೆಂಬ ಯಮಳರು ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ಮಿತ್ರಾವರುಣರು ಭವ್ಯವಾದ ಯಜ್ಞವೊಂದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ, ಮುನಿಗಳೂ, ಪಿತೃದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ಬಂದು ಸೇರಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಅಪ್ಸರೆಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಅತಿ ಲಾವಣ್ಯವತಿಯಾದ ಊರ್ವಶಿಯು ಬಂದಳು. ದೀಕ್ಷಾಬದ್ಧರಾದ ಮಿತ್ರಾವರುಣರು ಊರ್ವಶಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರು. ಅವಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುವ ಮಾತ್ರದಿಂದಲೇ ಅವರ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕಾರವುಂಟಾಯಿತು. ಕಠೋರವಾದ ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸಿದ ಅವರ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯ ಸಡಿಲಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ವೀರ್ಯಸ್ಖಲನವಾಯಿತು. ಅದನ್ನು ಕುಂಭವೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದರು. ಅದರಿಂದ ಎರಡು ಶಿಶುಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಬಂದವು. ಹಾಗೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಮೊದಲ ಶಿಶುವೇ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಇವರು ಕುಂಭಸಂಭವ.
ಸ್ಕಂದ ಪುರಾಣದ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖದಂತೆ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಗಿರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕವೇರ ಮುನಿಯು ಏಕಾಗ್ರತೆಯಿಂದ ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವಾಗ ಆತನ ದೇಹದಿಂದ ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಅಗ್ನಿಯು ಉತ್ಪನ್ನವಾಗಿ, ಆ ತಪೋಜ್ವಾಲೆಯು ಮೂರೂ ಲೋಕಗಳನ್ನು ತಲ್ಲಣಗೊಳಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಮುನಿಗಳೂ ಪಿತೃದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವನಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ವಾಲೆಯಿಂದ ಪಾರು ಮಾಡುವಂತೆ ಬೇಡಿಕೊಂಡರು.
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಕವೇರ ಮುನಿಯ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ತನ್ನ ಕೈನೀರಿನಿಂದ ಸಂಪ್ರೋಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ನಂತರ ತಪೋಜ್ವಾಲೆಯು ಶಮನಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಬಳಿಕ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಉದ್ದೇಶವೇನೆಂದು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ‘ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಲ್ಲದ ನನಗೆ ಸಂತಾನ ಭಾಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕರುಣಿಸು’ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ದೇವನು ಕವೇರ ಮುನಿಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ‘ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀನು ಮಾಡಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ನಿನಗೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಭಾಗ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ, ಚಿಂತಿಸಬೇಡ ನಿನಗೆ ಲೋಪಾಮುದ್ರೆಯೆಂಬ ಕುಲೋದ್ಧಾರಕಳಾದ ಕನ್ನಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ದಯಪಾಲಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ’ ಎಂದು ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸಂತುಷ್ಟನಾದ ಕವೇರನು ಪತ್ನಿಯೊಡಗೂಡಿ ಲೋಪಮುದ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಕ್ಷೇಮವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಸರ್ವ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳು ಮಾನವ ಕುಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುವ ವಿಶೇಷ ತಪಃಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ನದಿಯಾಗುವಂತೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವನಿಂದ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿತಳಾದ ಲೋಪಾಮುದ್ರೆ ಕವೇರಮುನಿಯ ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಕಾವೇರಿ’ ಯಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು ಕವೇರ ಮುನಿಯ ಅಂತ್ಯಕಾಲ ಸಮೀಪಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಪತ್ನಿ ಸಮೇತ ದೇಹ ತ್ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಲೋಕ ಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಲೋಪಾಮುದ್ರೆ ತನ್ನ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರನನ್ನು ಮೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿ ನಿರ್ಮಲವಾದ ನದಿರೂಪವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದುವಂತಹ ವರವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಳು.
ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮುನಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಋಷಿ ಆಶ್ರಮ ಗಳಿಂದ ಕಂಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಗಿರಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಆತಿಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವೇರಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಸಂತತಿ ಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಕಾವೇರಿಯನ್ನು ವಿವಾಹವಾಗುವ ತನ್ನಮನದ ಇಚ್ಚೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾವೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಋಷಿವಚನವನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲಂಘಿಸಬಾರದೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿ ಮುನಿಯ ಕೋರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿ ಮುನಿಯನ್ನು ವಿವಾಹವಾಗಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಗಿರಿ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದಳು
ಕಾವೇರಿ ತಾನು ನದಿಯಾಗಿ ಹರಿದು ಲೋಕಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ತನ್ನ ಮನದ ಬಯಕೆಯನ್ನು ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯನ ಮುಂದೆ ಇಟ್ಟು ತನಗೆ ಜಲರೂಪಿಯಾಗಲು ವರವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಲು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಳು. ಆದರೆ ಲೋಪಾಮುದ್ರೆ ಕೋರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮುನಿ ಪುರಸ್ಕರಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಿನಗೆ ವರವನ್ನು ಈಗ ನೀಡಲಾರೆ. ಮುಂದೊಂದು ದಿನ ನೀಡುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡ ಕಾವೇರಿಯು ‘ಎಲೆ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯನೇ ನೀನು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಉಪೇಕ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕ್ಷಣವೇ ನಾನು ನದಿಯಾಗಿ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತೇನೆ’ ಎಂದು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿದಳು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಆತಂಕಿತನಾದ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮುನಿಯ ತನ್ನ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಕಾವೇರಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಕಮಂಡಲುವಿನ ಒಳಗೆ ಬಂಧಿಸಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಮುನಿಯ ಸಂಧ್ಯಾವಂದನೆಗೆ ತೆರಳುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಮಂಡಲುವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯರ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹೊರಟು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ .ಇದೆ ಸಂದರ್ಭವನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಾವೇರಿಯು ಕೋಪದಿಂದ ಕಣ್ಣನ್ನು ಕೆರಳಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಜಲ ರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಮಂಡಲುವಿನಿಂದ ಜಾರಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಜಲರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಹರಿಯತೊಡಗಿದಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಶಿಷ್ಯರು ಬೆಚ್ಚಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ತಡೆಯಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಿದಾಗ ಕಾವೇರಿಯು ಕಣ್ಮರೆಯಾಗಿ ಗುಪ್ತಗಾಮಿನಿಯಾಗಿ ಹರಿಯತೊಡಗಿದಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಅರಿತ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಮುನಿ ಆಗಮಿಸಿ ಕಂಡಾಗ ಕಾವೇರಿಯು ಜಲರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಮೂರು ಯೋಜನ ದೂರ ಹರಿದು ದಾಟಿ ಹೋಗಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು
ಆಗ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಮುನಿ ಗೆ ತನ್ನ ತಪ್ಪಿನ ಅರಿವಾಗಿ ಪತ್ನಿಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಸುಂದರಿಯೇ ಪಾವನಳೇ, ಪಾಪನಾಶಿನಿ ಕವೇರ ಕುವರಿಯೇ ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಉಪೇಕ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ನೀನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದಂತೆ ನದಿ ರೂಪ ತಾಳಿ ಲೋಕ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಮಾಡುವಂತವಳಾಗು, ಆದರೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ನನಗೆ ಮಡದಿಯಾಗಿರುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಸಮ್ಮತಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ತನುವನ್ನು ಎರಡಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸಿ ಮೊದಲಿನ ಭಾಗ ಲೋಪಾಮುದ್ರೆಯಾಗಿ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯನ ಪತ್ನಿಯಾದಳು. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಭಾಗ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ನದೀರೂಪವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಳು.ಪವಿತ್ರ ನದಿಯಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಸಖಿಯಾದ ಮಣಿಕರ್ಣಿಕೆಯೊಡನೆ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿದಳು.
ಅಗ್ನಿದೇವನೇ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯನಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ
ಈ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳ ಅವತಾರ ಕಾರಣವೂ ಒಂದು ಕುತೂಹಲವಾದ ಕಥೆ. ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಗೂ, ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಿಗೂ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಮುಗಿಯದ ಯುದ್ಧ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ದೇವೇಂದ್ರನು ಅಗ್ನಿ ವಾಯುಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದು “ನೀವು ರಾಕ್ಷಸರನ್ನು ಬೆನ್ನಟ್ಟಿಹೋಗಿ, ಅವರನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಣಾಮ ಮಾಡಿ ಬನ್ನಿರಿ” ಎಂದು ಅಪ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರೂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರ ಹಾವಳಿಯನ್ನು ತಡೆಯಲಾರದೆ ಅನೇಕ ಅಸುರರು ಸತ್ತರು. ಅಳಿದುಳಿದ ಕೆಲವರು ಸಮುದ್ರದೊಳಗೆ ಅವಿತುಕೊಂಡರು “ಅಸುರರು ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ಹೊಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಹೇಡಿಗಳಾದ ಅವರಿಂದ ತೊಂದರೆ ಆಗಲಾರದು ” ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡು ಅಗ್ನಿ ,ವಾಯು ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿದರು.
ದೇವೇಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಇದು ತಿಳಿಯಿತು. ಅಗ್ನಿ, ವಾಯು ಕೆಲವು ರಾಕ್ಷಸರನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದು ಅವನಿಗೆ ವಿಪರೀತ ಕೋಪ ಬಂದಿತು. ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ “ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಪೂರ್ತಿಗೊಳಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ? ಈಗಲೂ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕಲಕಿ, ಅಡಗಿರುವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ನಿಶ್ಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ನಾಶಮಾಡಿ ಬನ್ನಿರಿ . ಸಮುದ್ರವು ಬತ್ತಿಹೋದರೂ ಸರಿಯೆ!” ಎಂದು ಆಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡಿದನು.
ಅಗ್ನಿ, ವಾಯುಗಳು ಹಿಂದೆಮುಂದೆ ನೋಡಿದರು. “ದೇವೇಂದ್ರ! ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ವಾಸವಾಗಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳಿಂದ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಯಾವ ವಿಧವಾದ ತೊಂದರೆಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ನಾವು ಸಾಗರವನ್ನು ಶೋಷಿಸಿದರೆ ಅವುಗಳು ನಾಶವಾಗುವುವಲ್ಲ, ಅನ್ಯಾಯವಲ್ಲವೆ?” ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದರು.
ದುಷ್ಟರು ಅಳಿದರೆ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಕ್ಷೇಮ. ದುಷ್ಟರ ನಾಶಕ್ಕೆ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಬೇಕು. ತಿಳಿದೂ ತಿಳಿದೂ, ದುಷ್ಟರಿಗೆ ಆಶ್ರಯ ಕೊಡುವವನು ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಅರ್ಹನಲ್ಲವೆ? ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮ, ಅಧರ್ಮಗಳ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಏಕೆ?. ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡ ಇಂದ್ರನು ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಶಾಪ ಕೊಟ್ಟನು; “ನೀವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮರೆತು, ಧರ್ಮಬೋಧನೆಗೆ ಬಂದಿರಲ್ಲವೆ? ಈಗಲೇ ಭೂಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿರು! ಧರ್ಮದ ಚರ್ಚೆಗೆ ಅದೇ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಸ್ಥಳ.” ಮತ್ತೆ ಅಗ್ನಿಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು “ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ನೀನೇ ಕುಡಿಯುವಂತಾಗಲಿ!” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಅಗ್ನಿ ವಾಯುಗಳು ಭೂಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ವಸಿಷ್ಠರಾಗಿ ಜನ್ಮತಾಳಿದರು. ಇಂದ್ರನ ಶಾಪವು ಭೂಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ವರವಾಯಿತು.
ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾರ್ವತಿ ವಿವಾಹ:
