ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯ ವಂಶದ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. ೫೫೦ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿಯಿಂದ ನಡೆಯಿತು.ಕೆಲವು ಇತಿಹಾಸಕಾರರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯ ವಂಶದ ಪ್ರಥಮ ದೊರೆ ಜಯಸಿಂಹ ಎಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿ ತನ್ನ ಆಡಳಿತಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗಿನ ಕಾಲದ ವಾತಾಪಿ, ಈಗ ಬಾದಾಮಿ, ಬಾಗಲಕೋಟೆ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.ನಗರವನ್ನು ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದ. ಆತನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಈಗಿನ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ, ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ , ಗೋವಾ, ಆಂಧ್ರಪ್ರದೇಶ, ತೆಲಂಗಾಣ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಧ್ಯಪ್ರದೇಶ, ಗುಜರಾತ್, ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು, ಕೇರಳದ ಕೆಲಭಾಗಗಳಿಗು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿದರು.
ಒಂದನೆಯ ಪುಲಕೇಶಿಯ ಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾಬಲ್ಯ ಪಡೆದ ಈ ವಂಶ ಎರಡು ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಲ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಕೀರ್ತಿಧ್ವಜವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿಹಿಡಿಯಿತು. ಕೀರ್ತಿವರ್ಮನಿಂದ ವಿಸ್ತೃತವಾದ ಈ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಪುಲಕೇಶಿಯ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀರ್ತಿಶಿಖಿರ ತಲುಪಿತು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ರಾಜರುಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದು ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಪಥೇಶ್ವರ ಎನಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಈತ ಉತ್ತರಭಾರತದ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟ ಹರ್ಷನನ್ನು ನರ್ಮದಾ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಬಿರುದನ್ನು ಸಾರ್ಥಕಗೊಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ. ಹರ್ಷನ ಆಸ್ಥಾನ ಕವಿ ಬಾಣ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ಚೀನೀ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ಯುವಾನ್ ಚಾಂಗ್ ಆ ಕಾಲದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವೈಭವವನ್ನು ಹೊಗಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈತ ೬೪೨ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಲ್ಲವ ನರಸಿಂಹವರ್ಮನಿಂದ ಸೋತು ಮಡಿದ. ೧೩ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಅನಂತರ ೬೫೫ರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಾಳುಕ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನಿಂದ ಪುನಃ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾಯಿತು. ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಪಲ್ಲವ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮೇಲೆ ದಂಡೆತ್ತಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಅದರ ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಎಲ್ಲೆಯಾದ ಉರಗಪುರದ , ಈಗಿನ ಉರೈಯೂರು-ತಿರಚಿರಾಪಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಮೀಪವರೆಗಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ೬೭೪ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಯಿಸಿದ. ನಾನಾ ವಿಜಯಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ಸುವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತ ಆಡಳಿತದಿಂದಲೂ ಆತ ಚಳುಕ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯವೈಭವವನ್ನು ಮೆರೆಸಿದ. ೨ನೆಯ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನೂ ಪಲ್ಲವರ ಮೇಲಿನ ದ್ವೇಷವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಯುವರಾಜ್ಯಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಮೂರು ಬಾರಿ ಪಲ್ಲವ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ ಕಂಚಿಯನ್ನು ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ. ವಾಯುವ್ಯ ಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಟಳ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅರಬರನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ಗುಜರಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಅಧಿಕಾರವನ್ನು ನೆಲೆಗೊಳಿಸಿದ. ಉದಾರಚರಿತನಾದ ಈತ ಶತ್ರು ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ ಕಂಚಿಯ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರಿಗೂ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಗೂ ಧನಕನಕಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಪುಲವಾಗಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟುದಾಗಿ ಶಾಸನಗಳು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ವಿನಯಾದಿತ್ಯ, ವಿಜಯಾದಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಉಚ್ಛ್ರಾಯ ದೆಸೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಈ ವಂಶದ ಅರಸರು ೭೫೭ರ ಸುಮಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ವಂಶದ ಕೊನೆಯ ದೊರೆ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಕೀರ್ತಿವರ್ಮನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕೂಟರಿಗೆ ಸಾಮಂತರಾದರು.
ಬಾದಾಮಿ ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೇ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಪ್ರಾದುರ್ಭಾವವಾಯಿತೆಂದು ಅನೇಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸತಜ್ಞರು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಮೊದಲು ಇತರ ರಾಜಮನೆತನಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಭಾಗ ಒಂದುಗೂಡಿ ಅದರ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟರೂಪ ದೊರೆಕಿದ್ದು ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ. ಇವರು ಅದರ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಮೇರೆಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿದರು ; ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರು. ಬಾದಾಮಿ ಇವರ ರಾಜಧಾನಿ. ಎಲ್ಲ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳಿಗೂ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹರಡಿತ್ತು. ಉತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ನರ್ಮದಾ ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನೂಲು, ಗುಂಟೂರು ಮತ್ತು ನೆಲ್ಲೂರು ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳು, ದಕ್ಷಿಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಸಮುದ್ರ- ಇವು ಈ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಉಚ್ಛ್ರಾಯ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲೆಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದುವು. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ ಈ ವಂಶಜರು ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಮತ್ತು ಆಂಧ್ರಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಅವು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಾಗಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಹೊರಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಾದುವು. ಪುರಾತನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಈ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಏಕೀಕರಣದಿಂದ ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾವೈಕ್ಯವುಂಟಾಯಿತು. ನಾಡಿನ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಸುಶಿಕ್ಷಿತವೂ ಶಿಸ್ತಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದೂ ಆದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕಬಲದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವಾಯಿತು. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕೂಟ ದಂತಿದುರ್ಗ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಬಲದ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಮತೀಯ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ, ಭಾಷಾ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಾರಂಗಗಳ ಮೇಲೂ ಈ ಏಕೀಕರಣದ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಅದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪಂಗಡಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾಜೀವನದ ಆದರ್ಶ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರಿ ಆತ್ಮಗೌರವವನ್ನು ವೃದ್ಧಿಗೊಳಿಸಿತು. ಯುವಾನ್ಚಾಂಗ್ ತಿಳಿಸಿರುವಂತೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಜನತೆ ಧರ್ಮಭೀರುಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದು ವರ್ಣಾಶ್ರಮ ಧರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಪಾಲಿಸುತ್ತ ನ್ಯಾಯಪರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳು, ಉತ್ಸಾಹಿಗಳು, ವೀರರು, ಉಪಕಾರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರಿಗಳು, ಅನ್ಯಾಯದ ದ್ವೇಷಿಗಳು, ಶರಣಾಗತರಿಗಾಗಿ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ ತ್ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲವರು- ಎಂದು ಇವರು ವರ್ಣಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸಾಧುಗೆ ಸಾಧು, ಮಾಧುರ್ಯಂಗೆ ಮಾಧರ್ಯಂ, ಬಾಧಿಪ್ಪ ಕಲಿಗೆ ಕಲಿಯುಗವಿಪರೀತನ್ ಎಂದು ಆ ಕಾಲದ ಶಾಸನವೊಂದು ಆಗಿನ ಕಾಲದ ಜನರ ಮುಂದಿದ್ದ ಆದರ್ಶವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
