ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಏಕೀಕರಣ ಭಾರತದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ೧೯೫೬ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ೪ ಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರು ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಿಲೀನಗೊಳಿಸಿದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮೈಸೂರು ರಾಜ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವು. ದಶಕಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ, ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ (ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೀದರ ಕೂಡಾ ಸೇರ್ಪಡೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು) ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಪೂರ್ವ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ 565 ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳು ಇದ್ದು, ಆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳನ್ನು ರಾಜ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು, ಅವರ ಮಾಂಡಲೀಕರು ಆಳುತಿದ್ದರು. ಬ್ರಿಟೀಷರು ಈ ದೇಶ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಆಹ್ವಾನವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದರು. ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳು ತಾವು ಇಚ್ಚೆಪಟ್ಟರೇ ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಪಾಕಿಸ್ತಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಬಹುದು ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಅಡ್ಡ ಗೋಡೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ದೀಪ ಇಟ್ಟ ಹಾಗೆ ರಾಜರಲ್ಲೇ ಅಧಿಕಾರದ ಆಸೆ ಬಿತ್ತಿ ಹೋದರು.
ಈ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತದ ಅವಿಭಾಜ್ಯ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿರುವ ಜಮು-ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರದ ರಾಜ ಹರಿಸಿಂಗ್, ಪಂಜಾಬ್ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ಜುನಾಗಡ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಮೋಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಮಹಾಬಾತ್ ಕಣಜಿ-ಖಖಖ ಹಾಗೂ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ನಿಜಾಮರಾದ ಮೀರ್ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲೀ ಖಾನ ಇವರುಗಳು ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 15, 1947 ರಂದು ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಲು ನಿರ್ದರಿಸಿದರು.
ಕಾಲ ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಜಮ್ಮು ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವು ಕೆಲವು ಶರತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಡ್ಡಿ ಸಂವಿಧಾನದ ಅನುಛ್ಚೇದ 370ರ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿತು. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ಜುನಾಗಡ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವುಕೂಡ 24 ನೇ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 1948ರಂದು ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಲು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೂಂಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ನಿಜಾಮರು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯುವ ಯೋಚನೆಯೂಂದಿಗೆ ಭಾರತ ಸರಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲವಕಾಶವನ್ನು ‘ಶ್ಡ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಸ್ಡಿಲ್ ಅಗ್ರೀಮೆಂಟ್’ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಕೋರಿದರು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇಡೀ ದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ 15 ಆಗಷ್ಟ್ 1947 ರಂದು ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಸಿಕ್ಕರೂ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಆ ಭಾಗ್ಯ ದೊರೆಯಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 15,1947 ರಂದು ದೇಶದಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಜನ ಭಾರತದ ತ್ರೀವರ್ಣ ದ್ವಜವನ್ನು ಹಾರಿಸುತ್ತ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯದ ಸಂತೋಷವನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳು ಅದನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತ ತಮಗಾದ ನೋವನ್ನು ನುಂಗಿಕೂಂಡು ಕುಳಿತರು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ಜನರು ಮತ್ತೂಂದು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಸಂಗ್ರಾಮಕ್ಕೆ ತಯಾರಾಗುವದು ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಯಿತು.
ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಅನೇಕ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ನಾಯಕರು ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಹೋರಾಟ ಮಾಡುತ್ತ ಬಂದರು, ಆ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಫಲವಾಗಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಭಾರತ ಸರಕಾರ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಕಾರ್ಯಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ‘ಆಪರೇಶನ್ ಪೋಲೋ’ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ 13-09-1948 ರಂದು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿ ಕೇವಲ ನಾಲ್ಕುದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 19-09-1948 ರಂದು ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಮುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಹಾಕಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಸಂಧರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಗಂಭೀರತೆಯನ್ನು ಅರಿತ ನಿಜಾಮ ಮೀರ್ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲಿಖಾನ ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಲೀನಗೋಳಿಸಿದರು. ಆಗ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವು ಒಂದು ರಾಜ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಕಾರ್ಯಚರಣೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಜನರಲ್ ಚೌದರಿಯವರೆ ಮಿಲಿಟರಿ ಗೌವರ್ನರಗ ಆಗಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದರು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವರು ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 1949ವರೆಗೆ ಮುಂದುವರೆದರು, ಅವರ ನಂತರ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿ ಎಮ್.ಕೆ.ವೆಲ್ಲೋಡಿ ಐ.ಸಿ.ಎಸ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದರು.
ನಿಜಾಮ ಮೀರ್ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲಿ ಖಾನ ಇವರನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರಕಾರ ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ರಾಜ್ಯಪ್ರಮುಖರಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿತು ಅವರು 1956ರ ವರೆಗೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮಪನರ್ವಿಂಗಡಣೆಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನಾಗಿ ವಿಭಜಿಸಿ ಬೇರೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳ ಜೋತೆ ವಿಲೀನಗೋಳಿಸಿದರು.
ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವ ಕಳೆದುಕೋಂಡಿತು ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ನಾಗರೀಕರು ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಸಲ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ದಿನಾಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವಂತಾಯಿತು. ಒಂದು ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ 15ನೆ ಆಗಷ್ಟ್ ರಂದು ಇನ್ನೂಂದು ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನ ಭಾರತ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿದ ದಿನ 17ನೇ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ರಂದು ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ-ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಮೋಚನಾ ದಿನಾಚರಣೆ ಎಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವು 1724ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊಗಲ್ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವಿಸ್ತರಣೆಯ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ಡೆಕ್ಕನನ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಉದಯವಾಯಿತು. ಇದರ ಮೊದಲ ವೈಸರಾಯವಾಗಿ ನಿಜಾಮುಲ್-ಮುಲ್ಕ ಎಂದು ‘ಆಸೀಫ್ ಜಾಹೀ’ ವಂಶಸ್ಥರನ್ನು ಮೊಗಲ್ ದೊರೆ ಔರಂಗಜೇಬ್ ನೇಮಿಸಿದರು.
‘ಆಸೀಫ್ ಜಾಹೀ’ ವಂಶದ ಮೂದಲ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರನಾಗಿ ಖಮರುದ್ದೀನ ಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದೀಖಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಸ್ವೀರರಿಸಿದನು.ಇವನಾಡಳೀತದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಿಡಿತ ಸಾದಿಸುವದೇ ಒಂದು ಕೆಲಸವಾಗಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇವನ ನಂತರ ನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ಮಗನಾದ ನವಾಬ್ ಮೀರ್ ನಿಜಾಮ ಅಲೀಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದಖೀ ಬಹದ್ದೂರ ಇವನು ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ.ಇವನು 1763ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯಧಾನಿಯನ್ನು ಔರಂಗಾಬಾದ್ ದಿಂದ ಹೈದ್ರಾಭಾದಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಿಸಿ, ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಡೆಕ್ಕನ್ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದವರೆಗೆ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. 1803ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೀರ್ ನಿಜಾಮ ಅಲೀಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದಿಖೀ ಬಹದ್ದೂರನ ನಿಧನ ನಂತರ ಇವನ ಎರಡನೇ ಮಗ ಮೀರ್ ಅಕ್ಬರ್ ಅಲೀ ಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದಿಖೀ ಸಿಕಂದರ ಜಹಾ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇವನು 1829 ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನ ಹೋಂದುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇತನ ನಂತರ ಮಗ ನಾಸೀರ್ ಉದ್-ದವಲಾಹ ಮೀರ್ ಫರಕುಂದಾ ಅಲೀ ಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದಿಖೀ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇವನು 1857 ರವರೆಗೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಇವನ ನಂತರ ಇವನ ಮಗನಾದ ಅಪ್ಜಲ್-ಅದ್-ದವಲ್ 1857 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ.ಇವನು 1869 ರವರೆಗೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇವನ ನಂತರ ಇವನ ಮಗನಾದ ಮಹಿಬೂಬ ಅಲಿ ಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದಿಖೀ 1869 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಇವನ ನಂತರ ಕೂನೆಯ ನಿಜಾಮ ದೋರೆ ಮೀರ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲಿ ಖಾನ (ಆಸೀಫ್ ಜಾಹ-7)1911 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ.ಇವನ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುನ್ನಡೆ ಸಾದಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇತನ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು 37 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.1948ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಲೀನಗೋಳಿವುದರ ಮೂಲಕ ನೇರವಾದ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಿಂದ ದೂರ ಸರಿಯುತ್ತಾನೆ ಆದರೆ 1956ರವರೆಗೆ ಮೀರ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲೀಖಾನ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ರಾಜಪ್ರಮುಖರಾಗಿ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ಕೂನೆಯ ನಿಜಾಮನ ಮೀರ್ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲೀಖಾನ 1886 ಎಪ್ರಿಲ್ 6 ರಂದು ಮಹಿಬೂಬ ಅಲೀ ಖಾನ ಸಿದ್ದಿಖೀಯ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಮಗನಾಗಿ ಪುರಾನಿ ಹವೇಲಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದನಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದನು. 1887ರಲ್ಲಿ ಇತನ ಅಣ್ಣನು ನಿಧನ ಹೂಂದ್ದಿದರಿಂದ ಮೀರ್ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲೀಖಾನನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಕಾಳಜಿ ವಹಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಇವನು 12ನೇ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ 1911 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು 18ನೇ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ 1948ರ ವರೆಗೆ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಆಳಿದನು. ಮೀರ್ ಉಸ್ಮಾನ ಅಲೀಖಾನ 1906ರಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ 21ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಶಾ ಭೇಗಂ ಇವರನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾದನು.ಇವನ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇವನು ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬನಾಗಿದ್ದನು.
ಇವನು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪಡೆದು.ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ, ಉರ್ದು, ಪರ್ಷಿಯನ್ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯ ಹೋಂದಿದ್ದನು.ಹಲವಾರು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಉರ್ದು ಮತ್ತು ಪರ್ಷಿಯನ್ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಇತನ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೈದ್ರಾಬಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವು ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಪೂರ್ವ ಭಾರತದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ದೂಡ್ಡ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣ 2,23,000 ಚ.ಕೀ.ಮೀ ಆಗಿತ್ತು.ಇದು ಈಗಿನ ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡಿನಷ್ಟು (ಈಗ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಒಟ್ಟು ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣ 1,91,976 ಚ.ಕೀ.ಮೀ) ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಅಖಂಡ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರಿಂದ ಅತೀ ಉನ್ನತ ಗೌರವ ಪಡೆದವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. 21 ಗನ್ ಸಲ್ಯೂಟ್ ನ ಗೌರವ ಪಡೆಯುವ ಭಾರತದ ಐದು ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನ ಪ್ರಥಮವಾಗಿತ್ತು.
