ಅಮರನಾಥ್ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ದೇವ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿರುವ, ಜಮ್ಮು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಗುಹೆ ದೇವಾಲಯ. ಸುಮಾರು ೫೦೦೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಹಳೆಯದಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಹಿಂದೂ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಗುಹೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಮಂಜಿನ ಗೆಡ್ಡೆಯೊಂದು ಲಿಂಗದ ಆಕಾರವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು ಇದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ೩,೮೮೮ ಮೀಟರ್ ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಶ್ರೀನಗರದಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು ೧೪೧ ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅಮರನಾಥ ಪದದ ಅರ್ಥ ಅಮರ ಅಂದರೆ ಚಿರಂಜೀವಿ ಹಾಗು ನಾಥ ಅಂದರೆ ದೇವರು ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳಿಂದ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಅಮರನಾಥ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದೆ.
ಅಮರನಾಥ ಮೂಲತಃ ಒಂದು ಗುಹಾ ದೇವಾಲಯವಾಗಿದ್ದು ವರ್ಷದ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವು ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಮಂಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯಿಂದ ರೂಪಗೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ವಿಶೇಷ. ಹಿಂದೂ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಅಮರನಾಥ ಅತಿ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳ ಪೈಕಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ ಶ್ರೀನಗರದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಯಾದ ಅಮರ್ನಾಥ ಗುಹೆಯು ನಮ್ಮ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಮುಡಿಪಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಮುದ್ರಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ 3888 ಮೀ. (12,756 ಅಡಿಗಳು) ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಈ ಗುಹೆಗಳು ಸುಮಾರು 5,000 ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಪುರಾತನವಾದುದು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಮರ್ನಾಥ್ ಗುಹೆಯ ಉದ್ದ, ಎತ್ತರ ಹಾಗು ಅಗಲವು ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ 60ಅಡಿ, 15ಅಡಿ ಮತ್ತು 30ಅಡಿ. ಈ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕವಾಗಿ ರೂಪಗೊಂಡಂತಹ ಹಿಮದ ‘ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ’ ವಿದ್ದು ಸಹಸ್ರಾರು ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತರು ದರ್ಶನ ಪಡೆದು ಪುನಿತರಾಗಲು ಆಗಮಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಆದಿಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ, ಪರ್ವತ ಕಾಡು ಮನುಷ್ಯ, ಸಂಸಾರಗಳ ಉತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಆ ನಂತರ ಕ್ರಮಾನುಸಾರವಾಗಿ ದೇವತಾ, ಋಷಿ, ಪೂರ್ವಪಿತೃ, ಗಂಧರ್ವ, ರಾಕ್ಷಸ, ಸರ್ಪ,ಯಕ್ಷ, ಭೂತಗಣ, ಕೂಷ್ಮಾಂಡ, ಭೈರವ, ಹದ್ದು, ದಾನವಾದಿಗಳೂ ಉತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯಾದವು. ಹೀಗೆ ಹೊಸ ಪ್ರಕಾರದ ಭೂತಗಳ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಇಂದ್ರಾದಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಸಹಿತ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಜೀವಗಳು ಮೃತ್ಯುವಿನ ವಶದಲ್ಲಿತ್ತು. ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಶ್ರೀ ಸದಾಶಿವನ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ, ಅವನನ್ನು ಸ್ತುತಿಸಿ, ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮೃತ್ಯು ಬಾಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಬಾಧಿಸದಂಥ ಉಪಾಯವನ್ನು ಹೇಳು ಎಂದಾಗ ಸದಾಶಿವನು ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮೃತ್ಯುಭಯದಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಅಭಯವಿತ್ತು ತನ್ನ ಶಿರದಿಂದ ಚಂದ್ರಮನನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿಸಿ ಅದರಿಂದ ಜೀವದೃವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹಿಂಡಿ ಇದು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೃತ್ಯುರೋಗದ ಔಷಧಿ ಎಂದನು. “ಹೇ ದೇವಿ, ಈ ಚಂದ್ರಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂಡಿದ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಅಮೃತದ ಧಾರೆಯೇ ಹರಿಯಿತು. ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ಆ ಧಾರೆಯು ಅಮರಾವತಿ ನದಿಯಾಗಿದೆ”.. ಚಂದ್ರಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂಡುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನ ಮೈಮೇಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಹನಿಗಳು ಒಣಗಿ ಪೃಥ್ವಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದವು, ಆ ಅಮೃತ ಬಿಂದುಗಳ ಕಣಗಳೇ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಭಸ್ಮವು. ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಕುರಿತು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ತೋರುತ್ತ ಸದಾಶಿವನು ದ್ರವೀಭೂತವಾದನು. ಜಲಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾದ ಸದಾಶಿವನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ದೇವತೆಗಳು ನತಮಸ್ತಕರಾಗಿ ನಮಿಸಿದರು. ನಂತರ ಸದಾಶಿವನು ಭಾವವಿಭೋರನಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ವಾಸ್ತವ ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ಪುನ: ಅವರಿಗೆ ತೋರಿದನು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ (ಕೃಷ್ಣ-ಶುಕ್ಲ) ಅಮೃತ ದ್ರವವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಘನೀಭೂತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಿವನು ಹೇಳಿದ : “ಹೇ ದೇವತೆಗಳೇ ನೀವು ಈ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಹಿಮಲಿಂಗ ಶರೀರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೀರಿ. ಇಂದಿನಿಂದ ನನ್ನ ಈ ಅನಾದಿಲಿಂಗ ಶರೀರವು ತ್ರಿಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮರೇಶ ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಖ್ಯಾತವಾಗುವದು. ನನ್ನ ಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ನಿಮಗಿನ್ನು ಮೃತ್ಯುವಿನ ಭಯವಿಲ್ಲ ನೀವಿಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದು ಅಮರರಾಗಿ ಶಿವರೂಪವಾಗಿರಿ”. ಈ ವರವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ದಿನದಿಂದ ಸದಾಶಿವನು ಲೀನವಾಗಿ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಇರತೊಡಗಿದನು. ಈ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿ ಶಿವನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ, “ಹೇ ಮಹೇಶ್ವರಿ, ಗರ್ಭಪಾತ ಮಾಡಿಸುವವನು, ಗುರುವಿನ ಶಯ್ಯೆಯನ್ನೇರುವವನು, ಮದಿರೆಯನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸುವವನು, ಚಿನ್ನವನ್ನು ಕದಿಯುವವನು, ಗೋಹತ್ಯೆ ಮಾಡುವವನು, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ಮಾಡುವವನೂ ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ಅಮರನಾಥನ ರಸಮಯಲಿಂಗ ಶರೀರದ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇ ಆದರೆ ಅವನು ಆ ಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಸಮಸ್ತ ಪಾಪಗಳಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. “”ಒಂದೆ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಪತಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು, ತನಗೆ ಅಮರತ್ವದ ರಹಸ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಬೇಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಇದರನ್ವಯ ಪರಶಿವನು, ಯಾರೂ ಕೇಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಾರದೆಂಬ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಈ ಗುಹೆಗೆ ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕರೆತಂದು ರಹಸ್ಯವನ್ನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ.
