ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರು(ಕುಪ್ಪಳ್ಳಿ ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಪುಟಪ್ಪ) ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಗಳೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಹಿರೇಕೊಡಿಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ 29 ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 1904 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರ ತಂದೆ ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ಗೌಡ ಮತ್ತು ತಾಯಿ ಸೀತಮ್ಮ.ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಭಾಗವಾದ ತೀರ್ಥಹಳ್ಳಿ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ಬೆಳೆದಿದ್ದು. ಇವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಉನ್ನತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ವೆಸ್ಲೇಸ್ ಹೈ ಸ್ಕೂಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದರು. 1929 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಮಹಾರಾಜಾ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು. ಪದವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಇವರ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರು 1937  ರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಮಾವತಿ ಎಂಬುವವರನ್ನು ವಿವಾಹವಾದರು.ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಮಹಾರಾಜಾ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರ, ಪ್ರಭಂದಕಾರ, ನಾಟಕಕಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಮರ್ಶಕ. ಇವರು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಮೊದಲ ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ವಿಜೇತರು.

ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಇವರಿಗೆ 1964 ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಕವಿ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ನೀಡಿ ಗೌರವಿಸಿದೆ. 1955 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ,1958 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪದ್ಮ ಭೂಷಣ, 1987  ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂಪ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, 1992ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರತ್ನ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ದೊರೆತಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ರಚನೆಗೆ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕವಿ ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದು ದೊರಕಿದೆ. 1964 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿಗಳಾದ ರಾಮಾಯಣ ದರ್ಶನಂ, ಕಾನೂರು ಹೆಗ್ಗಡತಿ,ಕಾನೂರು ಸುಬ್ಬಮ್ಮ ಹೆಗ್ಗಡತಿ, ಜಲಗಾರ, ಮಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮದುಮಗಳು,ಸ್ಮಶಾನ ಕುರುಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ,ಶೂದ್ರ ತಪಸ್ವಿ,ರಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಅನೇಕ ಕೃತಿಗಳಿವೆ. ಉಳುವ ಯೋಗಿ ಎಂದು ರೈತರ ಮೇಲೆ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಕವಿತೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಅಚ್ಚುಮೆಚ್ಚು. ಓ ನನ್ನ ಚೇತನ ಆಗು ನೀ ಅನಿಕೇತನ ಎಂದು ಮಾನವತಾವಾದದ ಮೇಲೆ ನೀಡಿದ ಸೂಚನೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ.
