ಭಾರತದ ಉಜ್ಜಯಿನಿಯ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ರಾಜನಾಗಿದ್ದನು. ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತಿಕೆ, ಶೌರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಉದಾರತೆಗಾಗಿ ಖ್ಯಾತನಾಗಿದ್ದನು. ಗಮನೀಯವಾಗಿ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟ್ ಹೇಮ್ ಚಂದ್ರ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಮುಂತಾದ ಅನೇಕ ರಾಜರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಾರತದ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ “ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ” ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದು ಬಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. “ಶೌರ್ಯ” ಮತ್ತು ಆದಿತ್ಯ ಅದಿತಿಯ ಮಗ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ತತ್ಪುರುಶದ ಹೆಸರೇ ರಾಜ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ. ಅದಿತಿ, ಅಥವಾ ಆದಿತ್ಯಾಗಳ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ಪುತ್ರ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಸೂರ್ಯ ದೇವರು, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ, ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಶೌರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವಿದೆ. ವಿಕ್ರಮ ಅಥವಾ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾರಕಾ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಮೊದಲ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಜೀವಿಸಿದ್ದನು, ಕಥಾ-ಸರಿತಾ-ಸಾಗರದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಉಜ್ಜಯಿನಿಯ ಪರಮಾರಾ ರಾಜ ವಂಶದ ಮಹೇಂದ್ರಾದಿತ್ಯನ ಮಗ. ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ಇದು 12ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ನಂತರ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ದೆಹಲಿಯ ತಾರ್ ಡೈನಾಸ್ಟಿಯ ಪೂರ್ವಿಕನು ಈ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನು ಎಂದೂ ಕೂಡ ಅನ್ಯ ಮೂಲಗಳು ದಾಖಲಿಸಿವೆ.
ಹಿಂದು ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ವಿಕ್ರಮ್ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರನಿಡುವ ರೂಢಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಅದು ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನಿಗಿರುವ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯತೆಯ ಧ್ಯೋತಕವೆನ್ನಬಹುದು ಮತ್ತು ಎರಡು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಜಾನಪದ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಕೂಡ ಅವನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ, ಇಂತಹ ಒಬ್ಬ ರಾಜನನ್ನು ಜೈನ್ ಮುನಿ ಮಹೇಸಾರಾ ಸೂರಿ ಬರೆದ “ಕಾಲಕಾಚಾರ್ಯ ಕಥಾನಕ” ದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ, ಕಥಾನಕ ಇದು ಕಾಲಕಾಚಾರ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಖ್ಯಾತ ಜೈನ ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿಯ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಗಾರ್ದಾಭಿಲ್ಲಾ ಎಂಬ ಉಜ್ಜಯಿನಿಯ ಬಲಿಷ್ಠ ರಾಜ, ಜೈನ ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿಯ ತಂಗಿ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿನಿಯೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಯನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಿಸಿರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ.
ಕೋಪೋದ್ರೇಕಗೊಂಡ ಜೈನ ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿ, ಸಾಕಾಸ್ಥಾನಾದ ಶಾಹಿಯ ರಾಜ ಸಕಾನ ಸಹಾಯವನ್ನು ಯಾಚಿಸಿದ. ಪವಾಡಗಳನ್ನೊಳಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರೂ ಅನೇಕ ವಕ್ರತೆಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ರಾಜ ಸಕಾ ಗಾರ್ದಾಭಿಲ್ಲಾನನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ಸೆರೆಯಾಳನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿದ. ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯನ್ನು ತಾಯ್ನಾಡಿಗೆ ಮರಳಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ಗಾರ್ದಾಭಿಲ್ಲಾನನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಪರಾಭವಗೊಂಡ ರಾಜ ನಿವೃತ್ತನಾಗಿ ಕಾಡು ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಲಿಯೊಂದು ಅವನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು. ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ (ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ)ದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾನ ವನ್ನು ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಆನಂತರ, ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಉಜ್ಜಯಿನಿಯನ್ನು ಆಕ್ರಮಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಸಕಾಗಳನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥ ವಿಕ್ರಮ ಸಮ್ವಾತ್ ಎಂಬ ಹೊಸ ಶೆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ.
ಭಾರತದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಾರಿತ್ರಿಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯ ಬಹು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ. ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಆ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಜೊತೆ ಘಟನೆ ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ಮಾರಕಗಳು ಸಂಯೋಗಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ವಿವರಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲ. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಕಥಾನಕಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಬೇತಾಳ ಪಂಚವಿಂಶತಿ ಅಥವಾ ಬೈತಾಳ್ ಪಚ್ಚಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿಂಹಾಸನ-ದ್ವಾತ್ರಿಂಶಿಕಾ ಇವೆರಡೂ ವಿವಿಧ ನಿರೂಪಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ದಿ ಟೇಲ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ದಿ ವ್ಯಾಂಪೈರ್ ದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೈದು ಕಥೆಗಳಿವೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಆ ಪಿಶಾಚಿ ಒಗಟಿನಂಥ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ ಅಂತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ವಾಸ್ತವಾಗಿ ಇದಕ್ಕೂ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಾಧುವೊಬ್ಬರು ರಾಜನನ್ನು ಉದ್ದೇಶಿಸಿ, ತುಟಿ ಎರಡು ಮಾಡದೆ, ಒಂದು ಮಾತೂ ಆಡದೆ ಆ ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯನ್ನು ಕರೆತರುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಮಾತನಾಡಿದಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಪಿಶಾಚಿ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರಿ ಹೋಗಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದೂ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಅಥವಾ ಅವನ ತಲೆ ಹೋಳಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದುರಾದೃಷ್ಟವಶಾತ್ ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಉತ್ತರವೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಿಡುವುದು ಆಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು, ಇದು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ಸಾರಿ ನಡೆದು ಕೊನೆಯ ಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಒಗಟಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಿತು. ಕಥಾ-ಸರಿತ್ಸಾಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಥೆಗಳ ನಿರೂಪಣೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ.
ಸಿಂಹಾಸನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂದ್ಧಪಟ್ಟ ಈ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನಕ್ಕೆ ನಂಟನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ ಆದರೆ ಇವು ಕಳೆದು ಹೋಗಿ ಆನಂತರ ಅನೇಕ ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ತರುವಾಯ ಧಾರ್ ನ ಪರಂಪರಾ ರಾಜ ಭೋಜನು ಅದನ್ನು ಪತ್ತೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿದ. ಈ ಉತ್ತರೋತ್ತರ ರಾಜನೇ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧನು ಮತ್ತು ಅವನು ಸಿಂಹಾಸನವನೇರುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳೇ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಕಟ್ಟು. ಈ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನವನ್ನು 32 ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಶಿಲೆಗಳೊಡನೆ ಸಿಂಗರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಆ ಶಿಲೆಗಳು ಮಾತನಾಡಬಲ್ಲವು,ತಾವು ಹೇಳುವ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ರಾಜ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನಷ್ಟು ಯಾರಾದರು ಉದಾತ್ತವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನವೇರ ಬಹುದೆಂದು ಸವಾಲನ್ನು ಒಡ್ದುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದು ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನ 32 ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿಯೂ ಭೋಜ ತನ್ನ ನಿಕೃಷ್ಟತೆಯನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, ಆ ಶಿಲೆಗಳು, ಅವನು ವಿನಮ್ರ ಭಾವನೆ ತಾಳುವುದರಿಂದ ಸಂತಸಗೊಂಡು ಅವನನ್ನು ಸಿಂಹಾಸನವನ್ನೇರಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನ ಕಥೆ ಬೆರೆತ ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಕಥಾಪ್ರಸಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ಮಂಡಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ವಿಕ್ರಮ ಅದ್ಧೂರಿಯಾಗಿ ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿ ದಿನ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಗ್ರಹದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಥನವನ್ನು ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನ ಅದು ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಬಗೆಯದಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನು ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತ ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಧರಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಆತನ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನು ಆ ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮನ ಜಾತಕದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಶನಿ ಗ್ರಹವು 12ನೇ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ ಇದು ಬಹಳ ಕೆಡುಕಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದನು. ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ ವಿಕ್ರಮನಿಗೆ ತೃಪ್ತಿ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ; ಶನಿ ಕೇವಲ ತೊಂದರೆ ಮಾಡುವವನಷ್ಟೇ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಂತ ತಂದೆ ಗೂ, ಗುರುಗೂ ತೊಂದರೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟವನೆಂದ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಪೂಜೆ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಲು ಶನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಹತೆಯಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಬಿಟ್ಟ ವಿಕ್ರಮ. ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವಿಯ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದವು ತನಗಿದೆಯೆಂದು ವಿಕ್ರಮನಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಇತ್ತು. ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಆಚರಣೆಯ ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಸಮೂಹದ ಮುಂದೆ ತನಗೆ ಅವಮಾನವಾಯಿತೆಂದು ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಕೋಪವುಂಟಾಯಿತು. ವಿಕ್ರಮ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವುದಾಗಿ ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ ಸವಾಲನ್ನೆಸೆದ. ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಯವಾದಾಗ ವಿಕ್ರಮ ಅದೊಂದು ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕವಷ್ಟೆ ಮತ್ತು ತನಗಿರುವ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದದಿಂದ ತನಗೊದಗುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ. ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನು ಜಾತಕದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಹೇಳಿರುವುದು ಸರಿಯಿರಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಶನಿ ಅಷ್ಟೊಂದು ದೊಡ್ದವನೆಂದು ತಾನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸಿದ್ಧನಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದನು ವಿಕ್ರಮ. “ಏನು ನಡೆಯಬೇಕೋ ಅದು ನಡೆದೇ ತೀರುತ್ತದೆ, ಏನು ನಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೋ ಅದು ನಡೆಯುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲಾ” ಆದುದರಿಂದ ತಾನು ಶನಿಯ ಸವಾಲನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವುದಾಗಿಯೂ ಹೇಳಿದ.
ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಕುದುರೆ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರನೊಬ್ಬ ಅರಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ವಿಕ್ರಮನ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೂ ತನ್ನ ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾರರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಈ ಕುದುರೆ ಕ್ಷಣಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕಾಶಕ್ಕೆ ನೆಗೆದು ಮರು ಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಮರಳುವ ವಿಶೇಷಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ. ಈ ರೀತಿ ಅದು ಹಾರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಓಡಬಹುದು. ವಿಕ್ರಮನಿಗೆ ಇದನ್ನು ನಂಬಲು ಸಿದ್ಧನಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಆ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಸವಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಆನಂತರ ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರನು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಆ ಕುದುರೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಅದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಚಾಟಿ ಏಟು ಕೊಟ್ಟನು. ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ಆ ಕುದುರೆ ಅವನನ್ನು ಆಕಾಶಕ್ಕೆ ಎಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಯಿತು. ಎರಡನೆಯ ಏಟಿಗೆ ಅದು ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಬರಬೇಕಿತ್ತು ಆದರೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಾಗಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ದೂರಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿ ಕಾಡಿನೊಳಕ್ಕೆ ಎಸೆಯಿತು. ವಿಕ್ರಮನಿಗೆ ಗಾಯಗಳಾದವು ಮತ್ತು ಮರಳಿ ಬರಲು ದಾರಿ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಇದೆಲ್ಲಾ ವಿಧಿಯಷ್ಟೇ ಇನ್ನೇನೂ ಇರಲಾರದು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತ ಕುದುರೆ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರನ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದ ಶನಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನನ್ನು ಕಾಣಲು ವಿಫಲಗೊಂಡ. ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಡಕಾಯಿತರು ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ದಾಳಿಮಾಡಿದರು. ಅವನನ್ನು ಥಳಿಸಿ ಅವನು ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದ ಆಭರಣಗಳನೆಲ್ಲಾ ದೋಚಿದರು. ಇನ್ನೂ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿಯ ಅರಿವಿಲ್ಲದ ವಿಕ್ರಮ ಕಳ್ಳರು ತನ್ನ ಕಿರೀಟವನಷ್ಟೇ ಒಯ್ದರು ತನ್ನ ತಲೆಯನ್ನಲ್ಲವಲ್ಲಾ ಎಂದನು. ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕಂಡ ನದಿಯೊಂದರ ಬಳಿ ಸಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಕಾಲು ಜಾರಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ಎಷ್ಟೋ ದೂರಕ್ಕೆ ಎಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿತು.
ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಬಹು ಕಷ್ಟದಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದನು, ಹಸಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಮರದ ನೆರಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತನು. ವಿಕ್ರಮ ಕುಳಿತ ಮರದ ಎದುರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಅಂಗಡಿ ಇತ್ತು, ಆ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಒಡೆಯನಿಗೆ ಸದಾ ಹಣದ್ದೇ ಚಿಂತೆ. ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಆ ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕುಳಿತ್ತದ್ದೇ ತಡ ಆ ಅಂಗಡಿಗೆ ಅಧಿಕ ಜನರು ಬಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರವಾಯಿತು. ಹಣದ ದುರಾಸೆಯ ಆ ವರ್ತಕ ಇದನ್ನು ಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ, ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ಮನೆಗೆ ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸಿ ಊಟ ಬಡಿಸಿಸಿದನು. ಅಂಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಕಂಡ ವರ್ತಕನು ಇದನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸುವ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ತನ್ನಲ್ಲೇ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ಹೂಡಿದನು ಅದರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ತನ್ನ ಮಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಊಟವಾದ ನಂತರ ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಕೋಣೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ರಮಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ವರ್ತಕನ ಮಗಳು ಆ ಕೋಣೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದಳು. ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಪವಡಿಸಿದ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯ ಬಳಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಎಚ್ಚರಗಗೊಳುವುದನ್ನೇ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ನಿಧಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಳಿಗೂ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಆವರಿಸಿದಂತಾಯಿತು. ತನ್ನ ಒಡವೆಗಳನೆಲ್ಲಾ ತೆಗೆದು ಬಾತುಕೋಳಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರಪಟ ನೇತು ಹಾಕಿದ್ದ ಮೊಳೆಗೆ ತಗುಲಿಹಾಕಿದಳು. ಆನಂತರ ನಿದ್ದೆಗೆ ಶರಣಾದಳು. ಎಚ್ಚರಗೊಂಡ ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಚಿತ್ರಪಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿದ್ದ ಬಾತುಕೋಳಿ ಆ ಪಟಕ್ಕೆ ತಗುಲಿಹಾಕಿದ್ದ ಒಡವೆಗಳನ್ನು ನುಂಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯದಿಂದ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆಯೇ ನಿದ್ದೆಯಿಂದೆದ್ದ ವರ್ತಕನ ಮಗಳು ತಾನಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಡವೆಗಳು ಕಾಣೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯನ್ನು ಕೂಗಿ ವಿಕ್ರಮನೇ ಅದನ್ನು ಕದ್ದಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದಳು.
ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ರಾಜನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಕರೆದೊಯ್ಯಲಾಯಿತು. ವರ್ತಕನ ಆರೋಪವನ್ನು ಆಲಿಸಿದ ರಾಜನು ವಿಕ್ರಮನ ಕೈ-ಕಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಕಾಡಿಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸಿದನು. ನಡೆದಾಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗದೆ ರಕ್ತ ಸುರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ನರಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು, ಆ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಜ್ಜಯಿನಿಯ ತನ್ನ ತವರು ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಗಂಡನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹಾದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯೊಬ್ಬಳು ಗುರುತಿಸಿದಳು. ಆತನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿ, ಕುದುರೆ ಸವಾರಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತ ಮಾಯವಾದ ರಾಜನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಜ್ಜಯಿನಿಯ ಜನರು ಆತಂಕಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಳು. ಆಕೆಯ ಭಾವ-ಮೈದುನರಿಗೆ ವಿಕ್ರಮನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ವಿನಂತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಳು. ಅವಳ ಕುಟುಂಬವು ನೌಕರರ ವರ್ಗದವರಾಗಿದ್ದು; ವಿಕ್ರಮನು ಕೆಲಸ ಕೇಳಿದನು. ತಾನು ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತು ಎತ್ತುಗಳು ಕಾಳುಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸುವುಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ತಿರುಗುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೂಗಿ-ಕೂಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದನು. ಬಹು ಕಾಲದವರೆಗು ಇನೊಬ್ಬರ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅತಿಥಿಯಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಲು ತನಗಷ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದನು.
