ಮೊದಲ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿ ಬಾಬು ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಸ್ಮರಣೆ ದಿನ. 1884 ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 3ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಹಾರದ ಜೆರದೈ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಇವರ ತಂದೆ ಮಹದೇವ ಸಹಾಯ್. ಇವರ ತಂದೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮತ್ತು ಫಾರಸಿ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವೈದ್ಯರು ಕೂಡ ಹೌದು. ತಾಯಿ ಕಮಲೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಸ್ಥರು, ದೈವಭಕ್ತೆ, ಪ್ರತಿದಿನವೂ ರಾಮಾಯಣದ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

ಇಬ್ಬರು ಗಂಡು ಮತ್ತು ಮೂವರು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಕುಟುಂಬ. ಬಡವ – ಬಲ್ಲಿದ, ಹಿಂದೂ- ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಮುಂತಾದ ಯಾವ ಭೇದ ಭಾವವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಆಡಂಬರಹಿತವಾದ ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ಜನರ ಒಡನಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಪ್ರಸಾದರು ಉಚ್ಚ ಆದರ್ಶ, ನೈತಿಕ ನಡೆವಳಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಋಜು ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಮೈಗೂಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಕೇವಲ ೧೨ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೇ ರಾಜ ಬನ್ಸಿದೇವಿಯವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಿವಾಹವೂ ಆಯಿತು.

ಆಗಿನ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯಂತೆ, ಪ್ರಸಾದರ ಮೊದಲ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪರ್ಷಿಯನ್ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಒಬ್ಬ ಮುಸಲ್ಮಾನ್ ಮೌಲ್ವಿಯಿಂದ. ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಶಾಲಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಸಾದರು ಶಾಲಾ ಕಾಲೇಜುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಮೇಧಾವಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಬಿ.ಎ., ಎಂ.ಎ. ಹಾಗೂ ಕಾನೂನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಗೇ ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಥಾನ. ಚರ್ಚೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಬಂಧ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಮಾನಗಳು ಇವರಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಟ್ಟದ್ದು.

ಪ್ರಸಾದರ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ದೆಸೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಅಡಿಪಾಯ ಹಾಕಲಾಗಿತ್ತು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಣ್ಣ ಮಹೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದರಿಂದ “ಸ್ವದೇಶಿ”ಯ ಪಾಠ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಸಾದರು ಸೋದರಿ ನಿವೇದಿತಾ, ಸುರೇಂದ್ರನಾಥ ಬ್ಯಾನರ್ಜಿ ಮುಂತಾದ ದೇಶ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳ ಭಾಷಣಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ವೃಂದದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ನಾಯಕ. 1906ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಹಾರಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದುಗೂಡಿಸಿ “ಬಿಹಾರಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಸಮಾವೇಶ” ಎಂಬ ಸಂಘವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿದರು.

ಪ್ರಸಾದರ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನ ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಆರಂಭಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಆನಂತರ ಅವರು ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಟ್ನಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಕೀಲ ವೃತ್ತಿ ನಡೆಸಿದರು. ಪಾಟ್ನಾ ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಸೆನೆಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿಂಡಿಕೇಟ್ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ನೇಮಕಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.

“ನನ್ನ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ವಿಷದ ಬಟ್ಟಲನ್ನಾದರೂ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಲು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಆತನೇ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್” ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯವರು ಆಡಿದ ಈ ಮಾತು ಬಾಬು ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ಅವರು ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯವರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ, ನೈತಿಕ ಸ್ಥೈರ್ಯ, ಕಾರ್ಯ ವಿಧಾನ ಹಾಗೂ ಆದರ್ಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಅನನ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಹಾಗೆಂದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಸಾದರು ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯವರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಪೂಜಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದರ್ಥವಲ್ಲ. ಭಿನ್ನಾಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಬಂದಾಗ ತಮ್ಮ ನಿಲುವನ್ನು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟಪಡಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಸಾದರು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಮೇಲೆ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಹಕಾರ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

1950ರ ಜನವರಿ 26ರಂದು ಭಾರತವು ಗಣರಾಜ್ಯವಾದಾಗ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಭಾರತದ ಮೊಟ್ಟ ಮೊದಲ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣವಚನ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದರು. 1952 ಮತ್ತು 1957ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾರ್ವತ್ರಿಕ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳು ನಡೆದ ನಂತರವೂ ಇವರೇ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾದರು. ಒಟ್ಟು 12 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದ ಬಾಬು 1962ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿ ಸ್ಥಾನದಿಂದ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾಗಿ, ತಾವೇ ಪಾಟ್ನಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ ಸದಾಕತ್ ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನ ಕಳೆದರು.

ತಮ್ಮ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರರು ಪತ್ನಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಅಕ್ಕನನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಚಿಂತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ಇದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಚೀನಾ ದೇಶ ಭಾರತದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಆಕ್ರಮಣ ಕೂಡ ಇವರನ್ನು ತುಂಬ ದುಃಖಕ್ಕೀಡು ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ 1963ರ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 28ರಂದು ನಿಧನರಾದರು.

ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದರಿಗೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಾನ ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವವಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಎರಡರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
