ಬೆಕ್ಕು, ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಹೆಸರು ಫೆಲಿಸ್ ಕ್ಯಾಟಸ್. ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಪರಭಕ್ಷಕ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಂಸಾಹಾರಿ ಸಸ್ತನಿ ಕಾರ್ನಿವೊರ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಸಾಕುಪ್ರಾಣಿ. ಇದು ಕ್ರಿಮಿ ಕೀಟಗಳು, ಹಾವುಗಳು, ಚೇಳು, ಇಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಕೀಟಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಸಂಗಾತಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಸುಮಾರು ೯೫೦೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾನವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಹಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.
ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಮಾಂಸಾಹಾರಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ. ಬ್ರೆಡ್ಡು ಅಥವಾ ಅನ್ನ ತಿನ್ನಬಲ್ಲುದಾದರೂ ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ಇದರ ದವಡೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಹಲ್ಲು ಮಾಂಸಭಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾರ್ಪಾಡಾಗಿವೆ. ಇಲಿ, ಅಳಿಲು, ಕೀಟ, ಮೀನು, ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಮುಂತಾದವು ಬೆಕ್ಕಿನ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಆಹಾರ. ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಇಲಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ತಪ್ಪು ಕಲ್ಪನೆ. ಇಲಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದು ಬೆಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಆನುವಂಶಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬಂದ ಗುಣ. ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವುದಾದರೂ ಇಲಿ ಅಳಿಲು ಅಥವಾ ಮೊಲಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವುದೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಮೀನು ಅಥವಾ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ಇದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿಯಲಾರದು.
ಯೂರೋಪಿನ ಕಾಡುಬೆಕ್ಕು ಫೆಲಿಸ್ ಸಿಲ್ವೆಸ್ಟ್ರಿಸ್ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಭೇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದೆ. ಇದು ಕಪ್ಪು ಚುಕ್ಕಿಗಳಿರುವ ಟ್ಯಾಬಿ ಎಂಬ ಸಾಕುಬೆಕ್ಕನ್ನು ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಕಾಡು ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಬಲಿಷ್ಠವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕುಬೆಕ್ಕಿಗಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದ ತಲೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಹಲ್ಲು ಇವೆ. ತಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶರೀರ 60 ಸೆಂಮೀನಷ್ಟು ಉದ್ದವಾಗಿದೆ. ಬಾಲದಉದ್ದ 30 ಸೆಂಮೀ, ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕಪ್ಪು ಉಂಗುರಗಳಿದ್ದು ಇದರ ತುದಿ ಕಪ್ಪಗಿದೆ. ಬುಡದಿಂದ ತುದಿಯವರೆಗೂ ಇದರ ಗಾತ್ರ ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ತಲೆ ಅಗಲ, ಕುಡಿಮೀಸೆ ಉಂಟು. ತುಪ್ಪಳ ಸಾಕುಬೆಕ್ಕಿನದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ದಟ್ಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಇವು ಒಂಟಿಜೀವಿಗಳು. ಸಂಭೋಗಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಗಂಡು-ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಜೊತೆಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಸ್ತನಿಗಳು, ಕೀಟಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳು ಇವುಗಳ ಆಹಾರ.
ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗ ಫೆಲಿಸ್ ಸಿಲ್ವೆಸ್ಟ್ರಿಸ್ ಗ್ರಾಂಪಿಯ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಭೇದ ಮಾತ್ರ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ. ಈ ಬೆಕ್ಕುಗಳು ಎತ್ತರದ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಂಡೆಗಳಿಂದಾವೃತವಾದ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಉಷ್ಣವಲಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಮಶೀತೋಷ್ಣವಲಯ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಚಳಿಯಿರುವ ಶೀತವಲಯ ಅಥವಾ ಧ್ರುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಕ್ಕುಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಟೆಬೆಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಕ್ಕಿನ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಹಿಮಕರಡಿಗಳು ಇವೆ.
ಬೆಕ್ಕುಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾನವನಂತೆ ಎರಡು ರೀತಿಯ ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳಿವೆ. ಮರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಆರು ತಿಂಗಳಾದಾಗ ಹಾಲು ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಬಿದ್ದು ಎರಡನೆಯ ಜೊತೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಸ್ಥಿರ ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಮೇಲ್ದವಡೆಯವು ಮುಂಭಾಗದ ಮೂರು ಜೊತೆ ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾಗಿದ್ದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಆಕಾರದ್ದಾಗಿವೆ. ಇವು ಬಾಚಿಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು, ಕೆಳದವಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಆರು ಬಾಚಿಹಲ್ಲುಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವು ಮೇಲ್ದವಡೆಯವುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಚಿಕ್ಕವು. ಬಾಚಿಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಇರಿದು ಸಾಯಿಸಲು ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗಿವೆ. ಮುಂದಿನ ಒಂದು ಜೊತೆ ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಬಲಿಷ್ಠ ಮತ್ತು ದಪ್ಪವಾಗಿ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಗಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚೂಪಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೋರೆಹಲ್ಲು ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು. ಇವು ಮಾಂಸವನ್ನು ಅಗಿದು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲು ಸಹಾಯಕವಾಗಿವೆ. ದವಡೆಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಮುಂದವಡೆಯ ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಮಾಂಸವನ್ನು ಅಗಿಯಲು ಸಹಾಯಕವಲ್ಲವಾದರೂ ಮೇಲಿನದವಡೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ಹಲ್ಲು ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಳಗಿನ ದವಡೆಯ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಹಲ್ಲು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಮಾರ್ಪಾಡಾಗಿದ್ದು ಮಾಂಸ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲು ಸಹಾಯಕ ವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕ್ಯಾರ್ನೆಸಿಯಲ್ ಹಲ್ಲು ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು. ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದ ಕ್ಯಾರ್ನೆಸಿಯಲ್ ಹಲ್ಲಿನ ಹೊರಭಾಗದ ಏಣಿನಿಂದ ಇವುಗಳ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ಯಾರಾಕೋನ್ ಎಂಬ ಏಣು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೋಟೋಕೋನುಗಳು ಒಂದೇ ಅಲಗಿನಂತೆ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಪ್ರೋಟೊಕೋನ್ ಮಾತ್ರ ಹಲ್ಲಿನ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬಾಗಿರುವ ಏಣಿನಂತೆ ಇರುವುದು. ಇದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅಲಗಿನಂತೆ ಇದೆ. ಕೆಳದವಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ಯಾರಾಕೋನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೋಟೋಕೋನ್ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡಿರುವ ಅಲಗಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಮೇಲಿನದು ತಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಮಾಂಸಭಕ್ಷಣೆ ಸುಸೂತ್ರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕ್ರಿ.ಪೂ.ಸು.3000 ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಹಿಂದಿನತನಕ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಈಜಿಪ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಕ್ಕನ್ನು ಮೊತ್ತಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಸಾಕುಪ್ರಾಣಿಯಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಲಾಯಿತು ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ನಂಬುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದೇ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಸಾಕುಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಆಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಬರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಮಾನವ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಮಾಂಸ ತಿಂದು ಹಾಳು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಕ್ಕು ನಾಶ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಮಾನವನಿಗೆ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತ ಸಂಗಾತಿ ಆಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಆತ ಅದನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡದೇ ಇದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಮಾನವ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಕುದುರಿರಬೇಕು. ಪ್ರಾಗೈತಿಹಾಸ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದಲೂ ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಮಾನವನಿಗೆ ಸರಿ ಸಮಾನವಾದುದು.
