ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ರಾಹುವನ್ನು, ಮೋಸ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಒಬ್ಬ ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ನಾಯಕನೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈತ ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡುವವರು, ಕೇವಲ ಸಂತೋಷವನ್ನು ಅರಸುವವರು, ಪರಕೀಯರ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಕಬಳಿಸುವವರು, ಮಾದಕದ್ರವ್ಯಗಳ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರರು, ವಿಷವನ್ನು ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುವವರು, ಅಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಅನೈತಿಕ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುವವರು ಮುಂತಾದವರನ್ನು ಈತ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈತ ಅಧರ್ಮೀಯ, ಬಹಿಷ್ಕೃತ, ಕಠಿಣ ಮಾತು, ಭ್ರಾಂತಿಕಾರಕತೆ, ಅಸತ್ಯ, ಅಶುಚಿತ್ವ, ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯ ಹುಣ್ಣುಗಳು, ಮೂಳೆಗಳು, ಹಾಗು ದೇಹಾಂತರ ವೇಷಧಾರಿ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಹು, ಬೇರೊಬ್ಬರ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಲಪಡಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗು ಒಬ್ಬ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತನನ್ನು ಶತ್ರುವನ್ನಾಗಿ ಬದಲಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣೀಭೂತವಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ವಿಷಕಾರಿ ಹಾವು ಕಡಿತಗಳನ್ನು ರಾಹುವಿನ ಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ಗುಣಪಡಿಸಬಹುದು. ಬೌದ್ಧಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ, ರಾಹು ಕ್ರೋಧದೇವತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೆನಿಸಿದೆ.

ಅಸುರರ ಕೈಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿ ಅವರು ಸಂತೋಷ ಕೂಟವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಭಯಭೀತರಾದ, ದೇವತೆಗಳು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿಗೆ ಮನವಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು,ವಿಷ್ಣು ಮೋಹಿನಿ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ತಾಳಿ ಅಸುರರನ್ನು ವಿಚಲಿತಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಅಮೃತವನ್ನು ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿದನು . ರಾಹು ಎಂಬ ಅಸುರನು ದೇವತಾ ರೂಪ ತಾಳಿ ಅಮೃತವನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸಿದ. ತಮ್ಮ ತೇಜಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ, ಸೂರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಚಂದ್ರ ಇದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ, ಮೋಹಿನಿಗೆ ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ಅಮೃತವು ಗಂಟಲಿನ ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿಯುವ ಮುನ್ನ, ಮೋಹಿನಿಯು ಸುದರ್ಶನ ಚಕ್ರದಿಂದ ರಾಹುವಿನ ತಲೆ ಉರುಳಿಸಿದಳು. ಅಮೃತ ಸೇವಿಸಿದ ತಲೆ ಚಿರಂಜೀವಿ ಆಯಿತು. ಸೇಡು-ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ರಾಹುವಿನ ತಲೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನುಂಗಿ ಗ್ರಹಣವುಂಟು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನಂತರ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಅಥವಾ ಚಂದ್ರ ಗಂಟಲಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದು ಗ್ರಹಣ ಮುಕ್ತಾಯಗೊಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಖಗೋಳ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ರೀತ್ಯಾ, ರಾಹು ಹಾಗು ಕೇತು, ಸೂರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಚಂದ್ರರು ಖಗೋಳಕ್ಕೆ ನೀಲಾಕಾಶ ಪರಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಲಿಸುವಾಗ ಅವರ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಎರಡು ಛೇದಕ ಬಿಂದುಗಳನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ, ರಾಹು ಹಾಗು ಕೇತುವನ್ನು ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ ಉತ್ತರ ಹಾಗು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಚಾಂದ್ರ ಸಂಪಾತಗಳೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಚಂದ್ರರು ಈ ಎರಡರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಬಿಂದುವಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗಿ ಗ್ರಹಣಗಳು ಉಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆಂಬ ವಾಸ್ತವವು, ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಹಾವಿನಿಂದ ನುಂಗಲ್ಪಟ್ಟನೆಂಬ ಪುರಾಣದ ಉಗಮಕ್ಕೆ ದಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ಶಿವ ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಹುವಿನ ಪುರಾಣ

ದೈತ್ಯ ರಾಜ ಜಲಂಧರನ ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವಂತೆ, ಜಲಂಧರನು ರಾಹುವನ್ನು ಶಿವನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿ, ಆತನ ಮೂಲಕ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯನ್ನು ಜಲಂಧರನಿಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಸಂದೇಶ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಸಂದೇಶದಿಂದ ಶಿವನು ಕೊಪೋದ್ರಿಕ್ತನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಆಗ ಕೋಪವು ಆತನ ಲಲಾಟದಿಂದ(ಹಣೆಯಿಂದ) ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡ ಒಂದು ಭಯಾನಕ ಜೀವಿಯ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ತಾಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಸಿಂಹದ ಮುಖವನ್ನು, ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳು, ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಸಲು ಒರಟಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶುಷ್ಕವಾದ ದೇಹ, ಉದ್ದನೆಯ ತೋಳುಗಳು ಹಾಗು ಕೋಪದಿಂದ ಜೋಲುಬೀಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನಾಲಗೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಭಯಾನಕ ಜೀವಿಯು ರಾಹುವಿನೆಡೆಗೆ ನುಗ್ಗಿ ಬರುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಆತನನ್ನು ನುಂಗಲು ತಯಾರಾಯಿತು. “ನಾವು ದೂತರನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ” ಎಂಬ ಶಿವನ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ನುಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ನಂತರ ಗಣವು ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿ, ಅದು ಹಸಿವೆಯಿಂದ ಯಾತನೆಯನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆಯೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿತು. ಗಣಕ್ಕೆ ಶಿವನು, ಆ ಜೀವಿಯು ಅಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಹಸಿವೆಯಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅದು ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಮಾಂಸವನ್ನು ಭಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆತನ ಮಾತುಗಳಂತೆ ಗಣವು ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿತು, ಅದು ತಲೆ ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬೇರೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ನುಂಗಿ ಹಾಕಿತು. ಇದರ ಭಕ್ತಿಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿದ ಶಿವನು, ಇದನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ದ್ವಾರಪಾಲಕನನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿ, ಎಲ್ಲ ಕ್ರೂರ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಭಯವನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಆದೇಶಿಸಿದ. ಶಿವನು ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಗಣವನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕಟ್ಟಳೆ ಹಾಕುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೀರ್ತಿಮುಖ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ.

ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಹು
ಹನುಮಾನ್ ತನ್ನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಹಣ್ಣೆಂಬ ಭ್ರಮೆಯಿಂದ ಆತನೆಡೆಗೆ ನೆಗೆದು ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದ. ಆ ದಿವಸ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಗ್ರಹಣವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ, ರಾಹು ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನು ನುಂಗಬೇಕಿತ್ತು. ಹನುಮಂತನು ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನು ನುಂಗಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದನ್ನು ರಾಹು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಹುವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಬಾಲಕ ಹನುಮಂತ, ಅದರ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕಗೊಂಡ ತಲೆ ಕಂಡು ಕುತೂಹಲದಿಂದ ಆಕರ್ಷಿತನಾಗಿ, ರಾಹುವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
