ಗುಜರಾತ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮೆಹಸಾನಾ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ವಡನಗರದ ಮೋದಿ ಪರಿವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ೪ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪೈಕಿ ಮೂರನೆಯವರಾಗಿ, ೧೭ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ೧೯೫೦ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋಧ್ ಗಂಛಿ ತೆಲಿ ಜಾತಿಯ ಅತಿ ಬಡ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ತಂದೆ ದಾಮೋದರ ದಾಸ್ ಮುಲಚಂದ್ ಮೋದಿ ಮತ್ತು ತಾಯಿ ಹೀರಾ ಬೆನ್. ವಾದ್ ನಗರ ರೈಲ್ವೆ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಚಹಾದ ಅಂಗಡಿಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋದಿಯವರು, ತಂದೆಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.ಅರವತ್ತರ ದಶಕದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಡೋ-ಪಾಕ್ ಯುದ್ಧ ನಡೆದಾಗ ಬಾಲಕ ಮೋದಿ, ರೈಲು ನಿಲ್ದಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೈನಿಕರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಯಂಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯಿಂದ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ೧೯೬೭ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಹ ಪೀಡಿತ ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಜನತೆಯ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅಖಿಲ ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಪರಿಷತ್ (ಎಬಿವಿಪಿ)ನ ನಾಯಕರಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಗುಜರಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ-ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಚಳವಳಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

೧೩ ನೆಯ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಮೋದಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಜಶೋದಾ ಬೆನ್ ಚಿಮಣ್ ಲಾಲ್ ಜೊತೆ ಮದುವೆ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾರ್ಥವಾಯಿತು. ೧೮ನೇ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಮದುವೆ ನೆರವೇರಿತು. ಬಾಲ ದಂಪತಿಗಳು ಜೊತೆಗಿದ್ದು, ನಂತರ ಪತ್ನಿಯನ್ನು ತೊರೆದರು. ಜಶೋದಾಬೆನ್ ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಳೆದು ಈಗ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕಾಲೇಜು ಹಾಗೂ ಉನ್ನತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಸೇರಿದಾಗ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಕಠಿಣ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋದಿ ಸಾಗಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.
ಅವರು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರು. ಭಾರತದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಅವರು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಸ್ವಯಂಸೇವಕ ಸಂಘದೊಡನೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಾಂಗತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಆರೆಸ್ಸೆಸ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮೋದಿ ಅವರು ಹಲವಾರು ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡರು.

ಕಾಲೇಜು ಹಾಗೂ ಉನ್ನತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಸೇರಿದಾಗ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಕಠಿಣ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋದಿ ಸಾಗಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.ಅವರು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರು. ಭಾರತದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಅವರು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಸ್ವಯಂಸೇವಕ ಸಂಘದೊಡನೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಾಂಗತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಆರೆಸ್ಸೆಸ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮೋದಿ ಅವರು ಹಲವಾರು ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡರು.
ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ೧೯೭೪ರಲ್ಲಿ ನವನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಚಾರ ವಿರೋಧಿ ಚಳವಳಿ ಹಾಗೂ ನಾಗರಿಕರ ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತುಕೊಂಡ ೧೯ ತಿಂಗಳ (ಜೂನ್ ೧೯೭೫ ರಿಂದ ಜನವರಿ ೧೯೭೭) ತುರ್ತುಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಹೇರಿಕೆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಸರ್ವಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಧೋರಣೆಯನ್ನು ವಿರೋಧಿಸಿ ಭೂಗತರಾಗಿಯೇ ಉಳಿದ ಮೋದಿಯವರು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಟ ನಡೆಸಿದರು.
