ವಲ್ಲಭಭಾಯ್ ಪಟೇಲ್, ಸರ್ದಾರ್ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ, ಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬರು. ಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ ಉಪಪ್ರಧಾನ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗೃಹಸಚಿವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರೊಬ್ಬ ವಕೀಲ ಹಾಗೂ ಭಾರತೀಯ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ ಮುಖಂಡರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಡೆದ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೇ, ಭಾರತದ ಗಣರಾಜ್ಯದ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದೊಳಗಿನ ಏಕೀಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದವರು. ಭಾರತ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರೆ ಕಡೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಸರ್ದಾರ್ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು, ಇದರರ್ಥ ಹಿಂದಿ, ಉರ್ದು, ಮತ್ತು ಪರ್ಷಿಯನ್ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ “ಮುಖ್ಯ”ವಾದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ. 1947ರ ಇಂಡೋ-ಪಾಕಿಸ್ತಾನ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸೈನ್ಯದ ಕಮಾಂಡರ್-ಇನ್-ಚೀಫ್ ಆಗಿ ಸಹ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರು ಕೈಗೊಂಡ ಕಠು ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳಿಂದ ಇವರಿಗೆ, ಉಕ್ಕಿನ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಅಥವಾ ಲೋಹ ಪುರುಷ ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದೂ ಪ್ರಜಾಮಾನಸದಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆತಿತ್ತು. ಗುಜರಾತ್ನ ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂತರ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಪಟೇಲ್, ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ವಕೀಲರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ತರುವಾಯ ಗುಜರಾತ್ನ ಖೇಡಾ, ಬೊರ್ಸಾದ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬರ್ಡೋಲಿಗಳಿಂದ ರೈತರನ್ನು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಅಹಿಂಸಾತ್ಮಕ, ನಾಗರಿಕ ಅಸಹಕಾರ ಚಳುವಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಸಂಘಟಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಗುಜರಾತ್ನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಭಾವಶಾಲಿ ನಾಯಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾದರು. ಅವರು ಭಾರತೀಯ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸಿನ 49ನೇ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ನೇಮಕಗೊಂಡರು. ಕ್ವಿಟ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಚಳವಳಿಯನ್ನು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲೇ, ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಪಕ್ಷವನ್ನು 1934 ಮತ್ತು 1937ರ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಸಿದರು.
ವಲ್ಲಭಭಾಯ್ ಝವೇರಿಭಾಯ್ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಗುಜರಾತಿನ ನಡಿಯಾದ್ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ ಅವರ ಸೋದರಮಾವನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಖೇಡಾ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕರಮಸಾಡ್ ಎಂಬ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ನಿವಾಸಿ ಝವೇರಭಾಯ್ ಮತ್ತು ಲಾಡಬಾ ಇವರ ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಮಗನಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ವಲ್ಲಭಭಾಯಿಯ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ದಿನ, ಮುಂದೆ ಅವರು ಮ್ಯಾಟ್ರಿಕ್ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ ೩೧ ಎಂದು ನಮೂದಿಸಿದರೂ, ನಿಖರವಾಗಿ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ಮಧ್ಯ ಗುಜರಾತ್ನ ಲೇವಾ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಪಾಟಿದಾರ ಸಮುದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದವರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ ಲೇವಾ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಡವ ಪಟೇಲ್ರ ಗುಂಪುಗಳು ಸರ್ದಾರ್ ಪಟೇಲ್ರನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮವರೆಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಸೋಮಾಭಾಯಿ, ನರಸೀಭಾಯಿ, ಮತ್ತು ,ರಾಜಕೀಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರಾದ, ವಿಠ್ಠಲಭಾಯಿ ಇವರ ಅಣ್ಣಂದಿರುಗಳು. ಕಾಶೀಭಾಯಿ ಎಂಬ ತಮ್ಮ ಹಾಗೂ ದಹೀಬಾ ಎಂಬ ತಂಗಿ ಇವರ ಇತರ ಒಡಹುಟ್ಟಿದವರು. ಪಟೇಲ್ರು ನಡಿಯಾದ್, ಪೆಟ್ಲಾಡ್, ಮತ್ತು ಬೋರಸಾಡ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಾಜರಾಗಲು, ಇತರ ಹುಡುಗರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಜೀವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ಅಚಲ ಸಂಯಮ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡರು.
ಪಟೇಲ್ ಭಾರತ ವಿಭಜನೆಯಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾದ ಹಿಂಸಾಚಾರದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಪಂಜಾಬ್ ಮತ್ತು ದೆಹಲಿಯ ನಿರಾಶ್ರಿತರ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಘಟಿಸಿ, ಆ ಭಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಂತಿ ಪುನಃಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಅವರು ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ “ಹಂಚಿಕೆಯಾದ” ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ವಸಾಹತುಶಾಹಿ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೊಂದಿದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರವಾಗಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಏಕೀಕರಿಸಿ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಭಾರತವನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮುನ್ನಡೆಸಿದರು. 1947ರ ಇಂಡಿಯನ್ ಇಂಡಿಪೆಂಡೆನ್ಸ್ ಆಕ್ಟ್ನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 565 ಸ್ವಯಂ ಆಡಳಿತದ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಸೇನಾಪಡೆಗಳ ಬೆದರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿ ಬಹುತೇಕ ರಾಜಪ್ರಭುತ್ವದ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿಸಿದರು. ಹೊಸ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಏಕೀಕರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರ ಬದ್ಧತೆಯು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ತುಸುವೂ ರಾಜಿಯಾಗದ್ದಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಪಟೇಲರು ೨೨ ವರ್ಷದವರಿದ್ದಾಗ, ಮ್ಯಾಟ್ರಿಕ್ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದರು. ಈ ಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಸರೀಕರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಟೇಲರು ಯಾವುದೇ ಮಹತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಜನಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ಪಟೇಲ್ ಸ್ವತಃ ವಕೀಲರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ಹಣವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಲು, ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಿಯಾಗಲು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಲು ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ತನ್ನ ಕುಟುಂಬದಿಂದ ದೂರವಿದ್ದು, ಇತರ ವಕೀಲರಿಂದ ಎರವಲು ಪಡೆದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿ, ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೇರ್ಗಡೆ ಹೊಂದಿದರು.
ತನ್ನ ಪತ್ನಿಯಾದ ಜಾವೇರ್ಬಾರನ್ನು ತವರು ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಕರೆಯಿಸಿ, ಗೋಧ್ರಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಈ ಜೋಡಿಗೆ, 1904 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣಿಬೆನ್ ಮತ್ತು 1906 ರಲ್ಲಿ ದಹ್ಯಾಭಾಯಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅವರಿಗೆ ವಕೀಲಿ ವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಪರವಾನಿಗೆ ಸಹ ದೊರೆಯಿತು. ಹಣ ಉಳಿಸಲು ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಪಟೇಲ್, ತೀವ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ನುರಿತ ವಕೀಲರಾಗಿ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿದರು. ಗುಜರಾತ್ನಾದ್ಯಂತ ಬಬೊನಿಕ್ ಪ್ಲೇಗ್ ಹರಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ, ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ ಆರೈಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಪಟೇಲ್ರಿಗೇ ಈ ಮಾರಿ ಅಪ್ಪಳಿಸಿದಾಗ, ತನ್ನ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಸುರಕ್ಷತಾ ಜಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿ, ತಾನೂ ಮನೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು,ನಡಿಯಾದ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾದ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಉಳಿಯಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು.
ತಮ್ಮ ವಾಸಸ್ಥಾನವಾದ ಕರಮ್ಸಾದ್ನಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಣಕಾಸಿನ ತಾಪತ್ರಯಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತ, ಗೋದಾ್ರಾ, ಬೋರಸದ್, ಮತ್ತು ಆನಂದ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ವಕೀಲಿ ವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿದ್ದರು. ಬೋರಸದ್ನ “ಎಡ್ವರ್ಡ್ ಮೆಮೋರಿಯಲ್ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಮೊದಲ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡ್ಗೆ ತೆರಳಲು ಅವರು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಹಣ ಉಳಿಸಿ, ಪಾಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಟಿಕೆಟ್ಗಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದಾಗ, “ವಿ.ಜೆ.ಪಟೇಲ್” ಎಂದು ನಮೂದಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇವರದೇ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಮೊದಲಕ್ಷರ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಇವರ ಅಣ್ಣನಾದ ವಿಠಲ್ಭಾಯ್ ವಿಳಾಸವು ಸಹ ನಮೂದಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುವ ಆಶಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ವಿಠಲ್ಭಾಯ್, ವಲ್ಲಭ್ಭಾಯಿ ಮೊದಲು ಹೋದರೆ, ಅಣ್ಣನಾದ ತಾನು ಅವನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ತನ್ನ ಗೌರವಕ್ಕೆ ಕುಂದು ತರುವಿದೆಂದು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಟ್ಟರು. ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಗೌರವಾರ್ಥ, ಪಟೇಲ್ ವಿಠಲ್ಭಾಯ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಲು ಅನುಮತಿ ನೀಡಿದರು.
1909 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಅವರ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಜಾವೇರ್ಬಾ ಬಾಂಬೆನಲ್ಲಿ, ಕ್ಯಾನ್ಸರ್ಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ, ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಆಕೆಯ ಆರೋಗ್ಯವು ಹಠಾತ್ತಾಗಿ ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ತುರ್ತು ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಯೂ ಅವರು ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನರಾದರು. ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯನ್ನು ಅಡ್ಡ-ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪತ್ನಿಯ ಮರಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಪಟೇಲ್ ಈ ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿದರು, ಅದನ್ನು ಕಿಸೆಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟರು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಅಡ್ಡ-ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿದರಲ್ಲದೇ ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದರು. ವಿಚಾರಣೆ ಕೊನೆಗೊಂಡ ನಂತರ ಅವರು ಸುದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊರಹಾಕಿದರು. ಮತ್ತೆ ಮದುವೆಯಾಗದಿರಲು ಪಟೇಲ್ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ತನ್ನ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರನ್ನು ಮುಂಬೈಯ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್-ಭಾಷಾ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದರು. 36 ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಲಂಡನ್ನ “ಮಿಡಲ್ ಟೆಂಪಲ್ ಇನ್” ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಕೇವಲ 30 ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, 36 ತಿಂಗಳ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಂಡಾಗ, ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಪಟೇಲ್, ತಮ್ಮ ತರಗತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತ ದರ್ಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಸಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿದ ಪಟೇಲ್ ಅಹಮದಾಬಾದ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ನಗರದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಿಗಳ ಪೈಕಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾದರು. ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್-ಶೈಲಿಯ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಧರಿಸುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಷ್ಟ ವರ್ತನೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರ್ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತ , ಅವರು ನುರಿತ ಬ್ರಿಡ್ಜ್ ಆಟಗಾರರಾದರು. ಪಟೇಲ್ ತಮ್ಮ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಿಂದ, ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಹಣಗಳಿಸಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಅಧುನಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಬೊಂಬೆ ಪ್ರೆಸಿಡೆನ್ಸಿಯಿಂದ ರಾಜಕೀಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಲು ಸಿದ್ಧರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅಣ್ಣ ವಿಠಲ್ಭಾಯ್ರವರೊಂದಿಗಿನ ಒಪ್ಪಂದದಂತೆ, ಅಹಮದಾಬಾದ್ನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಮನೆ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು.
ಗಾಂಧಿಯವರ ಚಂಪಾರಣ್ಯದ ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹದ ನಂತರ ಪಟೇಲರಿಗೆ ಭಾರತದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಯ ಗಳಿಸಲು ಗಾಂಧಿ ಸಮರ್ಥರು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿಕೆಯುಂಟಾಯಿತು. ಆ ಹಿರಿಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ, ಅತಿ ಸರಳ ಜೀವನ ಇವುಗಳಿಂದ ಆಕರ್ಷಿತರಾದ ಪಟೇಲರು ಗಾಂಧಿಯವರ ಆಪ್ತರಾದರು.
